The SEC owns FSR radios that we give to the leaders and gunners for communication on the trail on easy/moderate trails. I think the hard trail guys still use CB radios.

All the cool guys use FRS. And not just any FRS. 5 watt FRS.

These little radio's will operate any HAM frequency also, as long as you're licensed.

FRS is superior in just about every way when compared to out of the box CB radios. The only thing that would be better is a 50 Watt mobile mounted in the Jeep.

We could hear you loud and clear several trails away on the mountain on Friday when Ed was talking to you.

Clay and I did a test on the way home and found them to work pretty good at 1 mile away (relatively unobstructed land), and started breaking up at 2 miles away. We both have the extended antennas on ours though.

I could very easily see FRS radio's becoming mandatory at the next Crawl....

The only thing that's going to work any better than 5 watt FRS is 50 watt 2M and repeaters. Time to get your HAM license. Radio waves don't like going over and through mountains.

The only problem I had was we ended up on the FAM5 channel which it turns out Jim was using. We switched out and all was great.

Right, I'm not sure how it happened but lots of folks ended up using 155.500 which is a Maritime radio frequency. Technically, we aren't supposed to use that but we obviously weren't anywhere near the ocean for it to have been an issue.

All of the SEC radios were programmed with the basic FRS (Family Radio Service) frequencies which we are all allowed to use without a permit. 155.500+ are VHF frequencies.

FRS frequencies are as follows: (By law we're allowed to use the GMRS frequencies with the 5 watt radios.)
