I have a guy that will sell me a Dana 44 front and a Ford 5 with New Bears seals and breaks.. he wants $500 they need to be rebuilt what are they really worth? Considering I need to rebuild them also what else do I need?? Thanks!

Lol Ben, I've been given a set, I bought a set out of a 77 Ford F-150 for 600.00 that needed to be totally rebuilt, they are in my Cherokee now. I would say now that I was ripped off. The last set I bought were 250.00 for the pair, bought from two diffrent people. The 44 was a drum break so I cut off the C's to convert over to disc, I also bought a 77 Chevy axle for 50.00 that I'm using the knuckels for and all the outter stuff, calipers, rotors and so on.
Its only what your willing to pay.
If use that front axle your going to need to run the Ford radius arms you know that right? Because 78 and 79 have cast on wedges. If you want to run some other form of control arm or adjustable long arm you will need a 1976, or 1977 F150 axle. Or later but you will have to convert to disc break.

Hope this helps

That's the best way to learn, I knew the process on building axles, but I still learned a ton,and it opened my eyes on cost.

There is more to ask the seller!~ If the rear/ or front has a locker or posi. What ratio? With axles as old as those are chances are that someone has upgraded the internal components. Also if you are going to narrow it the casted radius arm wedges can be removed carefully and aftermarket c's added. I've been running the 44 radius set up on one of my 3 XJ's since 1992 and enjoy not breaking, bending, or cracking tubing or heims. People say they limit your travel and I'm sure they might (still yet to experience it) but most trails like the Hammers don't know your running radius arms!

I've never bent tubing or broken a heim, because it was built right, 188 wall and super joints. I already had a long arm setup before I went to my 44, so what was I going to do fab some radius arm mounts up. Its all about preference, or maybe about what you already have.
Dont knock someone else's setup, mine works just fine.
And yes the wedges can be removed but it's a big PITA why would someone want to do it unless they want to run radius arms, they could go find an earlier axle, its not like there rare.
