forum bandwidth

It uses a fair amount. This month it is on track to be over 100GB

Dang:eek:

Is that just the forum or all of naxja.com?

Members are allowed to upload pics & stuff as well huh? I'd imagine that would take a big bite outta it.

The only place people can upload pictures is in the Picture Showcase forum, and those are purged every 30 days or so.
It is a fairly active forum, almost 24 hours a day.
That figure is for the whole site, but I would say 98% is from just the forums.

Thanks:)

Reason I asked is that I'm considering setting up a forum for our club and wanted to know about how much bandwidth a forum would pull.

What would you guess a 100-200 member forum would pull monthly if I had it set to not have uploaded images...

Depends on several variables, so a figgure is hard to come up with. However, if it is a forum with a good skin (not a lot of big images etc....), not many (if any) uploads, then it would come down to how many people are online at any given time, how often they refresh the page, etc...

One thing to look at aside from how much bandwidth, is server resources. IF you only have 100-200 Members, and a low percentage are on line at any given time, you will be fine. If you get many of them on line at one time, you may run in to a problem with your host screaming about "excessive resource" usage, or Server Abuse. Some hosts put a "cap" , or restriction on simultaneous mysql connections at 20-25. So that is definately something you want to ask the host. Trust me, that is no fun. NAXJA has "been there-done that".

Ask lots of questions of your host. Find out where they stand. 100-200 Members probably would be OK with many places.... but not with others.

A guess... you would need maybe 2GB-3GB bandwidth. Make sure you understand what the charges are, if any, for going above your account specifications. Also, make sure your host can upgrade you to a bigger plan without dissruption if you need to.

Good luck!

Ahhh,

Not sure about server resources, but I found out we have a 50gb/month bandwidth ... so I think that would be plenty.

When I say 100-200 members, I mean max total of members with maybe 20 online at once.

Thanks for the help and advice:D
