for those with 31 or 33inch tires with stock gearing

I've run lots of different combos including 36s on 3.55s (4.0L/auto)

my favorite, BY FAR was 4.0L/auto 4.10s and 235/75 15s.

this was in a renix powered MJ. thing did 18-20mpg in town and 23-26mpg on the highway.

weighed less than an XJ by a solid 200lbs.

the new XJ will be 4" 33x12.50s and 4.88s (d30/d44)

ran the same setup w/ 4.10s on the MJ and just didn't have enough crawl.

IMHO, STOCK gearing is too tall. there's NO damn reason A Jeep needs to go 117mph. they should have ALL come with 3.73, 4.10 and 4.56

The thing is, when the engineers were spec'ing the the XJ out, they never imagined people lifting it, and putting 35's or 37's on it.

Just to chime in... 89MJ, 32s, 3.07s, Ax-15, and 4.6L Stroker...

Maybe its all the power the motor has, but I cruise on the highway at 75 in 5th @ 2K. The speedo should be calibrated correctly. I wouldn't mind new gears, and never run in 5th except over 65/70... but on the otherhand, it made an easy commute.

I just don't want to change gears until I put a 44 in the back.

And now I'm hearing rumors about 4.88s for my 8.25! I'll never make up my mind.

Not a rumor!! It is coming!!:yelclap:

I ran 3.07's and 32's drove from cali to florida and back not horrible a few parts through new mexico where it was a complete dog had to down shift to 3rd to keep up 50 which the engine didnt like started to shut down. Spent most of the trip drafting the big rigs went to 33's a little worse then switched to 4.10's much happier on the road and even ore off. Off road with 33's and 3.07 sucks arse.

I have 33's with 3:55's and the aw-4, its not to bad, when im at 60 mph its in 5th and chugs along, i dont drive it on the pavement very often,, I dont mind it off roading, the auto makes it nice though to put it in 4lo and go

my brother has a tj with d44's f/r with 5:38's on 33's, talk about low gearing, he has the 4:1 too so when he's in low range in first its almost too slow... On the highways he cant do more then 70 and the tach's around 4000rpms

i'm on 32s wit stock gears, not quite sure , but i think there 3.55 , its a 98 with an auto. its not all that bad, when i got it it had p215-65-16, and it would bark the tires at a stand still, wish it could do that with my 32s

I certainly can ;)

3", 31's, AX15, and 3.07's. I get around 20MPG (corrected) and use 5th quite often here in the mountains of SW Virginia. I want 4.10's when I re-gear but am having trouble deciding on weither to get the 8.8 w/ 4.10 or put 4.10's in my 8.25.

I have 3.55's, 33" tires, and a 4.7 stroker. My engine luggs like hell and I have to switch it between 3rd and drive to keep the rpm's up. I have the AW4 btw. I am almost done with cleaning and rebuilding/[ainting a 9" or the rear, and it is going to have wither 4.56 or 4.88's in it. Should be sweet

I don't know what the problem is. I have 3.55s and 33s. Other than the fact that gas sucks and my tranny is a POS it does fine. I run along at 60mph doing 2000rpm just fine... up hills n all. I will have 4.56 by the end of Feb tho!

The AW4 has 4 gear ranges. That includes overdrive.

interesting.

my bro's comanche is sittin 3" higher than stock with 31x10.50 and 3.07 gears. 5th gear works great, he gets 18mpg highway and 15mpg local. we're dropping it to 3.55 gearing because I already have the axles, and he'll be a bit better off.

my truck doesn't really count because frankly my comanche has a better engine than the 4.0 in every aspect. I'm running a 3.8 camaro v6 from a 95 camaro, my around town is 19mpg to 22mpg depending on how I drive, and I got as high as 31mpg when I ran 75mph all the way down to texas, nothing but freeway and interstate driving. it's got 31x10.50's on it, and 3" lift with 3.55 gears. when I lift it to 6.5" in a few months, I'll be going to a 4.09 rear dana 44 and regearing the front to 4.11, which will allow me to run my 33" tires with no notable loss in gas mileage.

4.0 suck, go camaro powerd :rock on:

(just kidding guys, wanted to get your blood boiling).

p.s. my dad gets no lower than 25mpg on his decrepit falling apart 86 comanche turbo diesel, and has been known to coax 34mpg out of it when the head wasn't cracked ;)

88 XJ 31"x10.50"x15" AW4 the numerically LOWEST gears the factory offered.. i dont think i even have 3.07:1... and anything over 60 is a nightmare... cant wait for 4.10's

Stock gears (3.55) and 33x12.5 A/T's soon ('01 4.0L auto). I'll run it like this for about a month, then I'll be going to 4.56's. This should bring it back pretty close to the stock ratio.

OD to OD lockup can feel like a gear change. My AW4 takes a lot longer to lockup in OD than my Dodge, it slams that into lockup as soon as it is in gear.

I am running 4.5" of lift with 31's and 3.55's (sucks) I have a set of 4.56's ready to go in. the Detroit softlocker i got (for free) had 4.56's on it, but we kept the stock gearing in interest of time (installed locker wed. night to leave for a wheeling trip that friday) This is all in a turdy5, but I haven't actually spent a dime on the rear, as they were all gimmie parts from a friend. I have spare shafts from my cousin's old 35 to take with me just in case too

After the holidays calm down, she is getting 4.56's, a SYE, new drive shaft control arm skids, front riddler diff cover and maybe an aussie up front (although I lust after an ARB) looking to put on boomerang shackles and RE 5.5 springs up front to move the 4.5 coils onto my beater jeep with the 4.5 AAL leaf pack I have sitting around
