My 91 jeep cherokee just caught the case of the famous lifter tick :bawl:

What are some of the remidies out there to do this without hurting my engine?

All feedback helps! thanks

I've always been afraid anything that will loosen up the junk in the lifters will also loosen up the junk plugging up the leaks in my XJ. :)

I've heard some guys recommend ATF, maybe do a search and see what ratio they recommend. I've never tried it myself.

Synthetic motor oil, in my experience. has much more detergent properties than regular Dino oil. But again, maybe it will loosen up some junk that is preventing a leak someplace.

Yeah.., some people use ATF, and sometimes that helps. Sometimes...

If you decide to give it a go.., drop a quart of motor oil from your engine, add a quart of ATF, and run engine for no longer than 15 minutes. Afterwards, remove the oil filter, drop all that nasty mixed up oil/mix, replace pan bolt, install new oil filter, replace with fresh oil. Some will also include Marvel Mystery Oil, STP, or some such.

There will be a hell of a lot of tail pipe smoke, and nearby eyeballs may think there is a fire some where nearby, while you are watching the clock. If you are in the country, with no nearby neighbors.., no sweat. Anywhere else.., the police may show up, the fire department, and an assortment of onlookers.., one of which may have called the authorities on you.

On the other hand.., mechanical issues are mechanical issues, and not often repaired from a can. Once lost hydraulic lifter tappets pressure in a 45k 258 cu.in. engine going 75 mph, and the cans fixed the problem which never returned, and the engine has 250k on it now. Good Luck!
