Explicit determination of open loop or closed loop?

So there have been lots of discussions I have seen about open loop versus closed loop operation. I have been doing some playing around with my setup and FIC, and I wanted to ask the question openly - Is there any method of interacting with the PCM that will return a clear indication if whether or not the PCM is operating in open loop versus closed loop? I'm looking for something much clearer than "I see the AFR hunting around 14.8 so I must be in closed loop". Is there a way to read OBDII data or another similar interaction on the CAN bus to return that status?

Or Scanguage will show it as a little 'open' or 'closed' circle(hard to see).
 
What kind of refresh rate do you see with the elm327 and TorquePro? I found the option in OBDwiz and the USB-OBD adapter but the refresh rate is terrible, about once every 5-10 seconds.
 
I don't think the refresh rate on Torque is anything special.
When you have a bunch of PIDs active on screen it slows down. Get down to one or two, it's better.
It's good enough for me to use testing a TPS's range, though, and snap-test an oxygen sensor.
A cabled scanner is probably going to be faster but I don't know which one to recommend, most of them are so poorly designed from a usability standpoint. The newer units should have a selectable PID for fuel mode, though. Depends on the car, too - not all cars support all PIDs.
I've got $45 or less into my BlueTooth / Torque setup and it works fast enough for me to do all the basics confident in the data I'm looking at.
 
The Innovate LM-2 wide-band 02/OBD2 scan tool that I had had an open-loop on/off indicator that would be real time. The LM-2 would get bogged down if you chose to monitor more than 5 or 6 "high priority" parameters though.
