Exhaust Q's

I'm new to the forum and was wondering if I could get a few pointers. I just got my first XJ for $100 dollars and the only thing I needed to do was put an exhaust on it(when I got it the original exhaust was lying next to it in the weeds). I bought a new pipe the bolts to the manifold and a dynomax turbo muffler to put on it. After mounting it I went to hang the rear of it to the Jeep but could find nothing to hang it to. Am I just supposed to weld a hanger to the underbody? Since the end of my exhaust stops in front of my rear axle I dont think I have too many options. Anyone else do this and run into problems? Where did you hang it from?

Once it gets to the rear axle it goes up and over it and then straight out the back. Inside the passenger side frame rail, next to the gas tank you will see about 6 holes. Inside that frame rail there should be a steel plate running front to back with welded on nuts on it. Thats called a nut cert plate and you need two of them to attach a factory gas tank skid plate to. However, on the passenger side a hanger attaches to two of those nuts inside the frame, at least on my 98. Thats the hanger you need, it has a plate, rubber bushing/hanging thingy and a an L shaped bracket that you use a muffler clamp to attach the back of the tail pipe to.

But I'm looking to attatch the exhaust in front of the rear axle. This is because that is where the exhaust ends now. Is it ok to weld to the bottom of the body on my XJ. I'm kinda weary of doing this since I'm not sure if its any good for the unibody construction.

-Am I just better off running the exhaust out the back of the Jeep. I was hoping to keep it tucked up in the middle to avoid pinchin it when I off road. Am I a retard for thinkin this?!!?

Should be a hanger in front of the axle 8 to 10". Make sure to put a turn down on the end of the muffler, if you don't the exhaust will blow directly on the tank. :flame: Not good. HTH. JIM.
