Im looking for a new muffler for my 96 XJ. Im on a pretty tight budget, so I'm looking at pretty cheap options.

I've heard good things about the Thrush Welded mufflers, and the price is right at $30.

What do you guys think? Any opinions or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to keep the price under $50.

Also, what size inlet/outlet will I need, and what offset?

Thanks,

other then do a search............ glasspack and thrush as u stated if thats ur budget. But u get what u pay for in sound quality and lasting long.

I believe the Thrush welded is the flowmaster knockoff. I havn't used one. I've used their glasspack, which was nice, and the Thrush turbo, which was ok. I used a 2.5" Thrush turbo (with adaptors) for years, it was loud, and did not sound like a flowmaster. I have since upgraded to a Dynomax Ultraflow welded, which sounds great, if you can stand spending 70 bucks on what is essentially a huge glasspack.

ok, the welded is the knockoff then. In that case I have heard it on a 4.0 and it sounds great at idle. Not bad on takeoff either. It sounds a little different from a FM40 which I like. I am not the biggest fan of a FM.

What size inlet and outlet will I need? 2.25"?
What offset?

Thanks for the replies!

I think you want 2.25 in and a side offset (you cannot specify that i can remember) and a center out 2.25 again. They also rent a toolkit with what you need to expand it to fit just right.

The offset on my Thrush turbo was correct.

Pick up that Dynomax cat back from summit, theres a 80$ rebate on it!

Just cut the muffler out, take your Jeep to the exhaust shop and have them run a pipe out the side of the Jeep... Loud Pipes Saves Lives!!! LOL!!! Yeah I am in this same prediciment now... my stock muffler decided to build a hole shortly after I purchased the Cherokee used.... so now I am in need of a new exhaust setup, might as well get the aftermarket setup that I would have gotten down the road now...

Does it have to be from Summit or can you buy it from wherever(I think AA has them for ~$120)? My buddy thinks the 2.5" SS Magnaflow and custom SS tailpipe I put on the 96xj I sold him are too loud, so I think I'll buy him that and trade(he liked the Dynomax sound on my bro's better).
I just searched--you can get them wherever and AA is up to $184.

Btw, if you are still looking...I basically bought the Thrush Welded muffler to be your guinea pig :-)

I posted a review in this section. For the $40 I paid, you can't really go wrong. Has a nice low rumble to it, and is almost identical to the sound of a Flowmaster 40. I will post a video later this week if you are interested.

And the offset I bought was 2.25'' offset in, 2.25'' center out, but looking back I think the center/center would have worked better. I just welded it up in place of my stock muffler and added some 2.25'' pipe to cover the difference in length.

Thats what I think Ill go for. Is there any annoying "drone" in the cab while driving? Of course it will noticeable in the cab, but is it too loud to handle even on the highway?
