I cycled the key three times. The ck engine lamp flashed 17 times. Anyone tknow what that would mean?

Yeah, you counted wrong. There should be a small pause in the flash sequence. These pauses denote the different numbers.
For example (1 denotes a blink): 1-11-11111-11111. Would be 13 blinks and represent codes 12 and 55.
Yours could be OBDII (not sure about CA models). If so, you can use a regular code scanner on it.
