Working on an 04 E350 V8 auto at work, stalls out when you put it in reverse sometimes (usually when its cold). Trans fluid level seems good, i have search this, but there seems to be a lot of different opinions. I was thinking the torque converter, but i dont know how to test to see if thats it. Any opinions/suggestions appreciated.

Is the engine idle speed within specs?

Check the idle speed cold, then fully warm the engine and transmission--20 minutes of operation--and then see if the idle speed is within specs.

sounds like this could be a converter issue to me

Check for pinched and frayed wires and hoses and bad motor mounts. My bet is that the drivetrain torquing the other direction when in reverse results in something being stretched or pinched that is otherwise fine.

Update, didnt really get to look into it, but finally got to drive it today, whats happening is when you shift into reverse is rpm's drop and it stalls, but if you just give it a little gas your fine. Dunno if that helps...
