yes. the d35 is only good for 3.55 stock since it is right at the carrier break.
How much for a carrier? not sure I never bought one since I upgraded to a GM 14b in the rear that came with the gears I needed. It would have to be a new one though since I do not belive there are alot of the up country 4 bangers around that came with the 4.56 set up. CHeck your local junk yards for some of the 2.5 XJ's and see if any of them have the 4.56 set, then you have a carrier good for your 4.88's.

I think the carriers are something like $50-$70 each.
