Doorless XJ radio install

Ok, I had my jeep broken into over Xmas, and haven’t put one back in. I want to install another radio w/ a small amp. It’s nice when you can have some tunes after you cross the river.

I run doorless most of the time so I’m thinking maybe mounting the radio and amp in a case where my rear seat used to be. Has anybody tackled this before? I would prefer if my radio and setup wasn’t stolen again.

Here is my trial speaker setup:

Tuffy Security has a center console that has a place for a radio in it, Things are pretty secure too. i had a customer that lost the keys to his and we spent probably 30 min. tryin to get in it before we called tuffy, there's a pattern for picking the locks but we had to go through all kinds of hell to prove we were a real shop before they'd give it to us.

Whats wrong with the stock glove box? My '00 has a locking door... If the thief doesn't know theres a radio in there, he probably wouldn't take a second look, especially if it's locked. When I run doorless or half doored around town I always throw my valubles in the glove box and lock it, no problems yet...

A buddy with a YJ bought an inexpensive AM/FM tape player for a headunit and then has all his tunes on an iPod that he plugs into it. Nobody will steal a tape deck and so far, so good. AIWA makes some with front input jacks.

Another option is a really cheap AM/FM head unit as a decoy. Then hide your good stuff.

Just leave the empty hole and a few random wires where the radio should be and potential thieves wont have a clue.

Until you drive past a potential thief with your radio blaring.

Might be a pain in the butt for future removal...but how about some of those one way screws? Like you see on bathroom stalls. You can tighten them, but if you try to loosen them, its tapered so the driver slips. I wonder if there is a special tool to remove them...or if they are truely one way. I thought about using them before to secure my amp and subs in my car.

Install a radio with a removable face plate. Then make a second face plate to put in when you leave the jeep. That plate shuld look like a broken radio with wires hanging out.

hehe ive looked at thoes before too. there is a special tool to remove them. i forget what those types of screws are called, but i know they have a name.

I take the Clarion faceplate off, and I have a Scosche sticker on the unit itself.

I know a guy who tack welded the radio into his truck. The theif would need a grinder to steal it. I don't know how possible that would be on an XJ...

First with the head unit:
Go buy the plastic adapter that makes it possible for a 1 DIN head unit to fit in place of the 1.5 DIN slot. This will bolt on and can only be unbolted when you take off the inside trim piece.

Take time installing the metal sleeve for the head unit (the part that attatches to the plastic permanently. Make sure to pull up all of the necessary tabs.

Slide the Head Unit in... Look at each side of the head unit. There should be a hole on either side that's just about where the metal sleeve ends. Put a screw from the installation kit (or one from a hardware store) into this hole so that when the head unit is attempted to be removed (using tools OR by force) the screws prevent the head unit from sliding smoothly through the sleeve.

Extra precautions: Find some way to attatch a metal braided wire, somewhat small to the head unit and crimp it on and then attatch the other end somewhere behind the dash.

That way, IF somehow they manage to get past the screws they have to get past the metal wire which if short enough should not be able to be reached from the front opening.

AMP and SPEAKERS:

Create a box that can be mounted onto the ceiling in which the amp is completely surrounded by wood that is screwed on in multiple places. Mount it to the roof (*inside). Dont make the wiring too obvious. Theives are probably too dumb to look at the roof of the car.
