Dog wanted

Well we are not in a hurry.Today found my daughters cats leg and collar in the green belt behind the house. She is so bummed! After discussion with her, she wants a dog instead of a cat so this doesn't happen again. Blow me away that a 9 year old put that together. But anyway I have been looking online and nothing has jumped out would like something similair to are other dog he is 30 lbs. and he is flat coat retriever XXXX spaniel mix. But at the same time I have always wanted a pit bull. Something that may scare someone if they entered our home. Our dog JD Wheeler is not an alpha gets along with everything hints the cat in the past. An input would be great. Maybe a female.
Thanks in advance. Cory

Hey Cory Sorry to hear about your little girl's cat. I volunteer with Basset Rescue here in Wyoming and we currently have several nice dogs up for adoption. I know a basset is not your first choice, but even if that is not your preferred breed pick one and check on line. I can guarantee there are plenty of great dogs out there looking for a special family to call theirs.

pits are GREAT dogs!!!
as long as you get one from good blood lines and at a good age to raise with your family, you will not find a better dog!

i wouldnt trade my pits for the world!
punish the deed not the breed! thats how i feel.

however, you living in denver may cause issues legally.
im not sure if pits are illegal still in denver....

Good looking pack. Kudos on rescuing them as well.

thanks, i wish i had enough money to rescue more.
there are so many pitty puppies and adult pits in the pound.... its sad.
i go through 50lbs of dog food every week and a half. lol
its worth it though. these dogs are our kids. we figure 4 bullies equal 2 kids. lol

We've spent twenty years rescuing dogs. We currently have three rescues, two beagles and a blue heeler mix. I rescued the heeler coming through the reservation from elk camp. She was about ten weeks old and in bad shape. It took me about twenty minutes to catch her. I know I was the dog and pony show for the Crow Tribe. I am sure that somewhere in Wyola Monana, a couple of the locals were on a porch yelling for their buddies to come watch the crazy white guy chase the stray...LOL.

I am with you on getting more but just don't have space or money.

Fact is that if someone is looking for a dog all you need to do is go to the pound or to a breed rescue site. Its sad but there are literaly thousands of dogs looking for a good home. Nice thing is that the rescue orgs do a good job of determining a dog's disposition and temperment.

Hey Adrenalinepriate didn't mean to hijack the thread, drop me a PM if you need any links. I have a few I can get you if need be. Any idea what got the cat? From your description I would put money on an owl. They are hell on cats around here.

pits are still very illegal in denver. i had a friend who lived in the area you are and he just had his vet put on record that his dog was a lab boxer mix. the county folk in denver cant identify most pitbulls anyway. they just have a checklist with broad appearance details such as "does the dog have long hair or short hair?" when evaluating dogs on "pit row". if youre looking to get one as a guard dog it wont do too much good. they love all people. they have a mean bark and normally that should take care of the problem but also since they have such a bad rep as it is any incident will just regress them from being accepted in these parts. boulder valley humane society regularly has plenty due to the ban in pueblo. good luck on your search!

X2 on checking out the shelters. Dont get hung up on a breed, mutts have better dispositions for a family pet.

theres a womens jail here in Colorado that adopts and trains dogs. Great program and the dogs are adopted out well trained. there adoption fees are pretty high. I have a belgain gsd i adopted from the program 2 years ago and its been the best dog ever.

My buddy adopted an Aussie cattle dog from that program..... very good dogs from that program indeed.

I'll second the recommendation to adopt from a rescue. If Pits are allowed where you live Cory, I know an excellent couple that runs a Pit rescue up in Ft. Collins. Definitely worth dealing with them as they spend a TON of time with the dogs getting them trained and they know which dogs are family appropriate and will do well with your other dog. They won't adopt unless you're willing to go with their visitation program. They have you come out and see the available dogs, find one or two to suit your needs, then schedule a time to bring the dog to you to see your home, ensure you're set up to deal with a Pit, and get the Pit warmed up to you and the other dog and new surroundings. Might take 2 visits. Then they'll adopt it out.

We got my Shepherd from them (long story how a Pit Bull Rescue ended up with a GSD) and they did great things with him. He's been a real good dog for us.

Thanks guys for the info. We ended up going to dumb friends league today and got dog. Female 2 year old lab mix. She is smaller, warmed up to me super fast knows how to sit, shake and roll over. Our other dog gets along great. We looked at three other dogs including a couple boxers. The girls already named her Daisy Rotor. Lol will post up a pic when we pick her up tommorrow.

Cool beans....That is flippin fantastic and some pooch gets a real home. If you ever get to northern Wyoming you have a beer waiting (not that you wouldn't have one waiting anyway). The least I can do for anyone adopting a homeless pet.

I will never own another breed other than a pit. The most loyal, loving, cuddly, people and animal loving dogs I have ever owned. The local shelter is full of them, too...

I would of loved to get one but we live in Littleton but its Denver county. I don't see us moving for a long time. That be said down the road for sure a pit. I wanted to take a pic of the new pup but she is really out of it from her surgery. We will see tonight.

Congrats. We have to dogs we got from the pound. Both are mutts and they both are great dogs. I'm glad you decided to rescue her instead of paying for a pure breed. I know there are responsible breeders out there, but there are a lot of puppy mills out there as well. If more people got dogs from the pound and not the pet stores, the puppy mills would have no business and they would go away.
