Do U need longer shocks with 2inch lift?

Howdy folks, I installed a 2 inch budget lift along with some new Michilin 30X9 inch tires on a 97 XJ 4X4. It's time for new shocks, do I need to install longer shocks with a 2 inch budget lift?

Not really, but if you're changing them anyway a set of stock YJ shocks are long enough for about 2.5-3" lift on an XJ. They even have the studs on top for the front ones. I had done this exact setup and they weren't too long on mine. Gave me more droop than the stock ones did. :)

You don't really have to use new shocks with a 2" lift, but I'd highly reccomend it.

I've found that YJ front shocks work well in the front of a 2-3" XJ lift (just press the sleeve out of the shock's bottom mount and install either a BPE or bar pin in the sleeve's place).

As far as the rear is concerned - YJ rear shocks are shorter than the factory XJ shocks. For mine (3" lift), I used the rear shocks listed for an '85 Isuzu Trooper II. The shocks will require a slight modification for the upper shock mount - use either a BPE or reuse the bar pin from your old shocks.

ZJ rear shocks will also work in the rear (w/ the same mods as the Trooper II shocks), but it is my understanding that they aren't quite as long as the '85 Trooper II shocks so you won't get quite as much droop out of these.

Hope this helps!

longer shocks

If you want to derive full benefit and full articulation from the lift then, yes, you need longer shocks. It is certainly possible to run that much lift with the stock shocks, but then you're giving up some of the wheel travel and articulation that is available to you.

Whoooopppsss...I recall now that only the fronts were YJ. I seem to remember Ranger for the rear or something. Could be wrong there. ;)

YES!!...If you run with your swaybar disconnected. I ended up breaking the mounting bolts on the bottom mount on the stock front shocks. I wheel as lightly as possible, too. I replaced my brake lines with longer YJ one and my shocks were definately the limiting factor. Pay carefull attention to the length of the shock when you're shopping around. I ended up with ones that were too long which really cut down on my compression. Best of luck.
