Diesal in an XJ?

They do make mechanical pumps to run on the newer TDI engines. They are expensive, but would greatly simplify the swap. The VW engines are neat, but would only be practical in close to stock cherokee. Even then it would be slow. Take a look on ebay for the what the engines are selling for. They sell for more than what most cherokees are worth.

I used the http://www.acmeadapters.com/ kit in a Zuki project. The 1.6L Turbo diesel and it is great in a lightweight rig, just not in this application.

Wasn't Jeep going to make a conversion kit for TJs with the 2.8 CRD engine? That would be the ideal place to start. There are a few outfits doing Landcruiser conversions, but they are in the 15-20K range.

If you're going to diesel for the MPGs you won't recover the cost. This is just my opinion being a VW diesel and Cherokee owner. Being Cool and different is worth something though.

I'm not overly convinced the Jeep would be exceptionally slow with the 1.9TDI from a Passat. While it is down almost 50hp from the HO 4.0 it does have an extra 50 ft/lbs of toruque. Also the Passat weighs more than a Cherokee. Granted the wheels/tires on a lifted Jeep will weigh more than the wheels/tires of a Passat, that is what proper gearing is for. The other thing is there are plenty of gofast goodies to be installed onto the TDI to make it far more powerful.

LOL!

One of only two XJ's in the US with an obama sticker on it.
I guess he was looking for a "CHANGE."

.

I must be the second :gag:

I agree with this statement, I'm just saying that once you start lifting, big tires, etc. it might not be a speed demon. If you kept the Jeep somewhat stock it would be fine. Also, the diesels are RPM sensitive and typically can't be overgeared ilke a gas engine to get back power. They can run out of RPMs on the highway.

The Suzuki Samurai (much lighter than a Jeep) is a slug with the 1.6 NA, decent with the 1.6 TD, and perfect with the 1.9 NA, and like a go-kart with the 1.9 TD. The Mercedes turbo diesel is another option, since they were somewhat common in the U.S. and there should be enough space under the hood. There are a few landrover conversions being done with those engines that have great write-ups on the internet.
