I went though some deep water the other night we had all the rain. wasnt that deep, but now it wont shift out of 1st.2nd thread. only responce i got was change fluid and filter. really dont see how that will help. fluid looks good.looked under tranny to see if some thing came loose. but nothing. water got to something just dont know what. It' been 3 days since, thought it might dry out but still doing it. 89 xj a/t :dunno: with 200k shifted fine before that.

Check your TPS (throttle position sensor) @ the throttlebody-they really dont like getting wet.The only other thing I can think of is maybe the shift solenoids inside the tranny.

One thing you can try is unplugging the trans computer. It's locate on the passenger side under the glovebox. The trans should shift manually unplugged. You will only have 1st, 3rd, and 4th. If it don't shift out of first and the whatnot, then it's something mechanical. (yes, this really is a factory quick test, I found it in my trans manual :) ) I had the same problem with mine. TPS went out on me. Kinda sucked driving home from Greeley in 2nd the night it happened... Just wondering, do you have hood vents? I do and all the rain and snow dump right on the TB. I need to fix that.

havent had time to mess with yet, drivin wifes xj I cut hood louvers in mine just recently. if i cant get trany shifting going to get rid of it and get somthing newer. runs good just not worth dumping $ into it.

TPS takes about 15 minutes to swap. You can also test yours out with a simple multi-meter. Do a search on TPS, I know there is a thread around here somewhere with the specs. I used it when I swapped mine out...

There is a selector switch located on the right side of the tranny that many folks refer to as the neutural safety switch, though that is only one of it's functions. It actually tells the PCM or on older models the TCM, what gear you want. If it gets wet or dirty inside, it has been known to cause the transmission to act unpredictably. It's worth a look and is only a couple screws. There was a write up I saw years ago on how to clean/inspect it, but I'm in rather a hurry this morning.
