what year did jeep stop using dana 44's as part of the tow package?

They used the D44's from 87-89. But the most common year to find them in is 87.

What other makes and models can it be found in? My local junkyards dont have any 87-89 jeeps

MJs also have them in the same year range, but as they're spring under axle you'll need to move the spring perches if you're putting it in an XJ.
Other than that, there are a lot of rear axle options but none are true drop-ins. Search the Modified Tech forum and you should get some ideas of what people have swapped in from Fords, Toyotas, Isuzus, etc.
