I just went through the trouble to replace my front axle u-joints, and discovered that most of the noise I was hearing was from the bearing on the right side. (had a little brakes-rubbing-for-30-miles mishap, toasted u-joints and obviously bearings) The bearings are obviously non-packable, and my haynes manual tells me that I'm screwed(slightly different wording).

So is the entire hub/bearing assembly available to replace as a whole? or do I need presses and whatnot to dissasemble and replace just the bearings?

if the whole assembly is available to buy, preferably with a core-deposit, that would be cool, but otherwise I might have to take it to a *gasp* repair shop! :eek:

I just replaced both front bearing hubs on my 93 a couple weeks ago. You do need to purchase the entire assembly and I got my Timken hubs from AutoZone for ~$130 each. There is no core charge. The replacement is pretty simple and since you replaced the u-joints, you already know what's involved.

At nearly $300, it wasn't cheap, but my XJ now rides smooth as silk. Well, as smooth as a 10 yr old vehicle with 170k miles on it can be expected to ride. :D
 
quadratec has them for the same price and quality.. i got one last spring and the wheel studs were loose!! they had not been presed in.. an easy fix, but double check yours before installing it.. a quick tack weld on the back of each will keep them from working lose as well... i dont know how common this is but i didnt like it..

i didnt have the money to buy new hub assemblys so i endid up rebuilding them it took about 3 hours each but was only $90 unless you have use of a good 10 ton press a torch and alot of Patience just buy the assembly
