CO Chapter Rubicon Run

Hey Guys,

Troy and I realized that we really want to run the Rubicon, and thought that putting it together as a chapter run would be fun. My initial question to the experts among you is what date, week, month, etc., is a good time. From the web it looks like summer time is best.

Secondly, if we do get a trip plan firmed up, we would love to have some knowledgable company join us, lead, laugh at us, whatever. :)

Thus far all the reponses I've had in the CO group have been from those with well built rigs, mostly trailered. I'm not trailered, and the smallest on 33" tires.

Thanks,

Fred

early fall is nice and not so packed, during the week is also quite but im sure a few guys might not be able to make that happen do to work and what not....Im in to show you guys around and Im sure a few guys here would be more then willing to join...pick some dates!! :)

We're working on it. I've got 10 rigs so far expressing real interest. We're a little distracted, since the state is burning down.

be sure to read through the sierra chapter's various threads as there is almost always someone wanting to setup a rubicon run. another great option is to come to our sierrafest run then hit the con the day after since it is in the same neighborhood. that way you get maximum wheeling while on vacation.

There's been lots of interest in a Rubicon run but nobody has really stepped up to organize it. My guess is that if you plan it, you will get at least a few rigs to come run it with you.

The best time of year to run the Rubicon is in September, or very late August. Avoiding the 3 day weekends is probably a good idea as well if you want a relaxing quiet trip. There are also a few weeks that the trail is closed/reserved for the Jamborees. Check the Rubicon event calendar in the Rubicon section over on Pirate 4x4.

If you wanted to have a local guide, then I would suggest planning on starting the run on a Thursday/Friday. I might be interested. I don't have much free time this year, but I could probably find the time to run the trail with you guys.

For tow rigs, plenty of parking at the Loon Lake trailhead. The loop from the Tahoe end of the trail back to Loon Lake is quite a haul, you will want to turn around and head out the same way you came when the weekend is over. Another option is to park your tow rig at one of the casinos in South Lake Tahoe, then drive your wheeler to the trail. You can head out the Tahoe side of the trail and South Lake isn't that far of a drive.

The weekend after Labor day is always good, most of the asshats are broke and broken by this time of year. There are fire restrictions, and the dry year we have had will most likely keep us from having camp fires from July to October on the trail.

Wag bags are a must when on the Rubicon. I know the Sierra Chapter had a bunch left over from last year's run so if you need some post it up here first.

Ill probably be in on this, depending on condition of junk and how close it is to alleys sept 27th birthday run.

How safe is it for the vehicles at the Loon Lake trailhead.? Is the casinos obviously better?

I started a poll for whether this year or next would be better. It looks to me like people prefer next year. Better for saving money, worse for getting plans finalized.

I've been meaning to post this up here....a few of us from the SoCal chapter will be running the trail from Loon to Tahoe Aug 13th-16th (right after Sierra Fest). Ran it for the first time at last year's Sierra Fest and had a blast! Reply to the thread below if interested.
