so in the middle of lancaster i went to go into first gear and my clutch "popped" and disengaged. Now it will not go into any gear whatsoever. i really have no idea how i got it into the parking spot that i did as it was semi uphill once this happened, and it just seemed to have drifted magically into the theatre parking lot. i noticed as i was getting a ride away from it that there was a small trail of fluid behind my car from where it would have stopped at and i had to push it the rest of the way, but was not positive it was mine or not, but looked fresh like it could have been!

could it have just been a clutch master cylinder.. leak?? (read that off google, im not too familiar with this stuff)
what are the symptoms of just the fluid problem, or an actual clutch failure, or whatever else there is?

i duno im tired and pissed bc now its gonna cost me an extra $150 a week to drive the jeep to work =( and my car is like 50 miles away from my house and its gonna suck to get towed home.

any help would be great.

The pedal feels ok still? does it make any noise when you push down the clutch? Where in lancaster is it? I could take a look at it for you. I assume it is probably a hydraulic clutch in that. It is stuck in gear or you cant get it into any gear?

I have to run to work tonight but will be back early morning 1 am or so. will check again and see if i can come up with any other ideas.

yeah pedal is fine, doesnt make any noise. i am not sure what kind of clutch?

it will not go into any gear at all.

it is at that musical theatre across from rockvalle outlets.

won't go into any gear, as in, can't get the shifter in? or if you put the shifter in and let the clutch out, you don't go anywhere?

it could be the syncros in the tranny that went if it just won't go into gear but the clutch is still fine... no idea how expensive that is to fix. probably not worth it in an 88. maybe find a new tranny from a junkyard?

look for any leaks underneath, but i'd tend to doubt that anything is leaking....

Ok from what i foudn out they had either the clutch cable or the clutch master cylinder. You need to check for fluid in the clutch cylinder, and or a broken cable. If you can see the linkage to the trans from the clutch then you just need to push the clutch while someon looks at the linkage. if the linkage is moving then bad news. Probably a shift fork. If it isnt then either the clutch master cylinder or cable is broken. if you need plan on going down to check it out this weekend give me a ring. i would be happy to take a look at it for you.

it goes into gear but doesnt move.
probably something with the shift fork. forgot to mention it crapped out on me about a month ago and decided it didnt like 5th gear and would pop out of it. but all th eother gears worked then. blaaah.
looks like im gonna have to get it towed or something. i only paid $500 for the car, but that blowwwws.

it didnt make any noise when it happend? and you say it goes into gear? could be pressure plate or throw-out shaft. have you tried just leaving it in gear to start? if you do does it try to move forward or just sit there?

yeah just made like a pop noise and didnt go anywhere when it happened. i havent been up at it to check if it trys to go fwd if started in gear or not, but i wll check it out tomorrow when i go up to get it towed.

If the trans wasnt going out in the wifes cherokee I would haul it for you. Do you have any friends with pickups or anything with a hitch. iI am pretty sure that we can get a dolly or even a trailer for about $50 from uhaul.

I've got a hitch on my XJ... don't have the wiring hooked up, though. could we just have the 4ways blinking on the car? could drive the XJ to work tomorrow and follow you to Lancaster. Let me know.

edit: never mind.
