Second best would be to flush the oil drain back areas with copious amounts of mineral spirits. Once you get the debris flushed to the pan, remove the pan to clean by hand.
If the head is still off, you could turn the crank enough to get each piston down the hole enough to wipe up the debris with a clean, oily rag.
After all that, you will have to pre-lube the engine before start up, and hope for the best.
