I've got a friend that has a Uniden Grant XL CB radio that he got in a trade. It supposedly had stuff done to add channels to it. He also has a magnetic K40 5 or 6' whip with a long cable that goes with it.

Has anyone used either of these or know if they have a good reputation? He wants $100 for the whole set and I'm thinking about buying it. It's for a good cause, he's getting some 42" TSL's.......:D

TIA!

I have a grant XL, love it, if you have the room for it. it is big. i ended up mounting mine between the sun visors to the roof. but it works great. it takes a less common 4-pin mic, i had to go to a cb shop to get it. mines set up with a 4.5 foot cobra fiberglass ant. i get great reception. line of sight, from the top of a hill, i was talking to a trucker 15 or so miles away. plus you get side band with the grant xl, so basically an extra 80 chanels at 12 watts, but you need to talk to someone with a side band radio to use it.

The Uniden Grant XL is a Single side band radio....SSB is an off channel of each channel. Like channel 3 will have an upper and lower side channel. Sort of off Frequency. They are nice because not alot of radios have them. Only problem is....Not alot of radios have them. In order to make use out of them someone else has to have a SSB radio too.
100 bucks is an ok price and if you wanna help your friend out go for it.
Only real problem is the size....XJs are hard to find room to put a radio that big.

I'm pretty sure he's tossing in the mic, so I won't have to worry about finding that. I'm going to look at it next time he's around, so I'll see how big it is. It probably won't get used too much, so I'll be able to tuck it away. I was thinking possibly cut off the front section of the console in my 95 and mount it there. I'll have to reach past the shifter to get to it, but with my long arms thats no problem! :laugh3:

Just wondering, the K40 antenna, will that work well? And if I want to permanently mount it in the future, will I be able to convert it?

hillbilly_jeeper- Didn't I see you mention that mount a while back? Do you have the link for that and/or pics? THX!

i'll get some pics tommarrow and try to get them posted up.
i used a old cd changer bracket, but any thin 90* bracket would probably work. it was just the right width to use the screws that hold the little visor clip, and i drilled 2 more holes. therse like a brace up there that you can screw into. just use short screws. only thing, the mike cord hands down in front of the window, dont know if that will bother you. but i like it, out of that way, and easy to reach. though, it would be in the way of a cage, if i put on in.

Sounds like a simple and effective mount. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get the CB since it gets good reviews, so pics of the mount would be great for once I'm home working on my rig again! If I can't find the mount you mentioned I usually can find scrap sheet metal around and make my own. The cord could probably just get pushed above the visor to get it out of the view, couldn't it?

im sure you can tuck the cord up there somewhere. i just dont worry about it. dosent bother me. try to get a pic for you tomarrow. mines not real pretty, but mines not a nice DD rig, either.

Hey, a Grant is a great radio. and K40 is a great antenna.

And this channel mod that he has done is a very good thing
Dont confuse the channel mod with sideband, its totally different
the channel mod is an extended frequency range, at least 40 above and below the normal CB freqs.

If you dont buy it I will....plus you are somewhat local, I could probably shoot a wave across the bay to ya.

Sorry creeperjeep, but I picked it up! :D

It's in REALLY good shape! The control for the extra channels is a knob with 6 settings in place of the dimmer knob. I'm not sure how that works or most of the other setting for that matter. My old POS only had volume, squelch, channel, CB/PA, and hi/low. So what do all the other things do? Just a brief explanation of the basics would be helpful!

And the size....it is big. Now I see where the title XL came from! :laugh3:

Thanks for all the input so far, :worship: I'm really glad I picked it up!

BTT......I'm hoping hillbilly_jeeper has the pics of his mount, but I'd love to see anyone elses mounts for CB's of this size. Headliner, transmission tunnel, dash, console, whatever. I'm just looking for any ideas. TIA!

my local radio shack carries k40 stuff maybe you can convert to permanent mount, i have a cobra radio like the uniden but not as loaded mic gain will make the mic louder into radio, if u use a noise cancelling mic, turning it up will make you sound louder when u broadcast, rf gain will help pull in other cb's, ssb and extra channels i know nuthing about but hope i explained a few of the knobs

I mounted my larger Cobra CB under the driver seat. Extra long mic cord and a mic bracket on the lower dash keeps everything tucked away neatly. Just make sure it's secure, so it doesn't slide out and under your pedals at the wrong moment.

Sorry i didnt have a chance to get pics up sooner. ive been buisy with buying another car and whatnot. as you can see, itds not the prettiest mounting, but it gets the Job done. After all, my jeeps built for business, not looks!!

Ok, you just made up my mind! I like the look of that. I've got access to some aluminum scraps that I can bend like those CD changer mounts and cut them to size easily. Hopefully I'll get around to it while I'm home on break next month......

Thanks for the pics! :D

The Grant XL is an excellent radio. I too vote for mounting it between the visors. I made my mount system out of aluminum and painted it flat black. Looks store bought. Looks a lot like hillbilly_jeepers set up. Except mine is more level with the floor not the roof...make sense? Will work great either way. Even after a bunch of slamming around it hasnt really moved up there. I also see that hillbilly has a power mike... those are awsome. The Grant has a mic gain built into it...the power mike will add even more boom to your voice if you can get one. I run mine with a wilson 1000 and they work good together. If you want more pics of how to mount it PM me and Ill send you some.

yeah, you can see the little nuts i put up their to kinda level it back down. its not bad where its at, but i may try to make it more level in the future. i kinda have to sit up to see what channel in on. and i do love the power mic! and i have a PA speaker under to hood...that gets fun!! im gonna be wiring it to a switch, so i can play the radio through it.
but i really like the radio. i have a 4.5 foot cobra ant., and good coax. I get great reception.

Haha...I thought I was the only one with a PA speaker under my hood. It is fun! Kinda comes in handy every so often. Eh...it was free...I like free stuff. It might be coming off soon because I may be doing onboard air and its getting tight under the hood.

Yo billy...

Is there a raised roof channel or something to tap into when you mounted the upper screw?? How much clearance do you think is up there before drilling a moon roof??

Haven't torn into mine yet to mount my Uniden but may be doing that this weekend. I have to engineer it nicely as this IS MY DD..

Thanks,

on my 93, there was an overhead brace up there. you dont have to worry about drilling to far as long as you stop once you get throuw the brace. therse a air gap in the brace, its like a piece of sheet channel welded to the roof. its the same thing that the clips for yhe visors thread into.
