I'm in the process of building a waterfall in our backyard, and needed to dig out a small pool at the bottom for the pump. Couple shovels full of dirt, and I hit some sort of metal post. Our property used to be a farm, so I'm thinking, fence post.

Dig a little more, and see there's some sort of bracket attached, so now I think, gate post.

Couple more shovelfulls, and I'm looking at the ends of leaf springs, attached to the shackle and frame rail. Hmmm...

Keep digging, way more than I needed for the pool, and find a tire, on a rim, attached to rest of it.

So I borrowed a snatch block from Randy (Intrepid XJ), and hook it up to the winch, in the hopes of not having to dig any more...

Of course, it was attached to an axle, so all I did was drag my heep forward.
Get out the sawzall, which cut right through the housing, but didn't work too well on the axle shaft. So I grab the grinder, which of course I had no cutting discs for, and eventually grind through the shaft, finish cutting the housing with the sawzall, and start pulling again.

Oh yeah, the main leaf is still attached to something further undergound, so I cut that with the grinder, and claimed my prize :D

That's a High Pinion Dana 60 converted for rear usage, stuffed with 4.88 gears, an ARB and 300m shafts. Still needs some disc brakes though.

seriously.

prove me wrong :D

I concur.

If nothing else.....makes a good story to tell John!

What are you doing typing here for? Git yer ass out there and dig up the rest of that thing... :D

Now you've got some Chinaman pissed because someone just cut the end off of the anchor on Winch Hill on Yu Soo Fat Trail. :D

With a 4-lug pattern?

Maybe after I retire, I'll dig up the rest just to see what the hell it is...

I did think of calling the FBI so they could dig it up for me, but figured I wouldn't be happy with how they did it...

Wow, buried treasure!
That beats the buried concrete stairway I found under the front yard of my old house.....nice recovery practice session John.

I'd dig BELOW where you found it. If it was upside down, as in a complete vehicle, you may find what that leaf was attached to. At the least try to rent a high end metal detector and do some scanning.

Finding something like that would have me renting a Bobcat and I'd be excavating the whole fawking yard.

seriously dude.........while i can see your point in not planning on making a big hole, this is to cool a find to just cut a piece of and leave it...........you should keep diging and see what's there.................who knows you might finally bring some closure to a 50year old murder case or something. LOL i would keep digging. who knows maybe there's a case of money or gold in the back seat from a robbery or something.......................hey people have found weirder things, it's worth a shot.

it's like that guy that was diggin in his backyard and ended up discovering a new species of dinosaur or some shit like that...........i don't remember exactly, saw it on the discovery channel long time ago.

:roflmao: That was great!

I would also be digging it up but can understand why not to. Good project after retirement.

Kim.

John just might need a bigger truck for it too. :D

I'm just glad it wasn't in my back yard.
:D

Well, considering where I live I would just figure its the axles off the house.

The wife would consider it suddenly some sort of great and imminent danger to the kids and make me dig the entire thing out.

BTW, its a Studebaker axle.
