Camping and regs in NJ, NY & PA

Hello east side brothers and sisters...

I'm planning a sort of epic journey out to the east side of the country (i usually fly) and this time because of a lot of different circumstances, i have to drive the xj out there. i'm not quite sure she's ready for that long of a journey after my lift, but i have to be in and out of NYC for at least a month so it makes sense to bring a vehicle.

so i have a couple of questions that I need some help with...

1.) right now i'm missing my fender flares and i have 31x10.5's on 4 inch backspacing...since my vehicle is registered out of state, can i get a ticket for a fender flare violation in any of these states? I still have the stock flares that i could re attach temporarily for now, but if it only applies to in state vehicles, then I'm not worried.

2.) are there any campgrounds within a resonable commute to the city? (if you live out there you know what a resonable commute is) i'm either looking for something that is driveable (i lived out there for 2.5 years so yes i am very familiar with nj and nyc traffic) or if there is something that would be a short drive to a NJ transit station or a metro north station???

3.) Just in case of emergency...because xj's never break...are there any people/shops i should know about. i usually do all of my own work, but just in case of anything fails and i don't have the tools for it, it would be nice to know there are friendly faces somewhere. i would even be willing to do my own wrenching if someone out there has some tools or space they would be willing to loan. i bring gifts in the form of beer, whiskey and bacon...if you are a kind and sharing person who doesn't want to share details on here, you can send me a pm too. i'm HOPING i don't have to fix anything, but my xj is getting up there in the miles, so anything can happen.

thanks in advance!

camp within a reasonable commute of the city? lol... youre looking around at least an hour and a half away without traffic. add in rush hour traffic and youre at 2-3 hours easy. you can camp at west hills park which is like 5 minutes from me and i would figure an hour and a half to two hours to get into the city from here depending on what time you leave during rush hour.

what part of li are you in? i'm working for a week in northport, so depending on a few things it might be easier to move there to a campgrounds after than new jersey. is there a LIRR train nearby?

i'm not going to be going to the city every day, and i have a place to stay in the city when i need to plus a friend in jersey that i can stay with too so i'm really just looking for somewhere somewhat peaceful to be when i'm not working in the city

considering when i lived in queens it took me 1-1.5 hours to get to most jobs i needed to get to, and the fact that i will probably need to be on site at 6am does make driving a more attractive option sometimes. i have 2 or 3 places i know of for cheap or free parking near where i'm going, however sometimes it is easier just to commute in on a train when i'm working in the afternoon. naps on the commuter trains are something i do quite well :) i was hoping to find something that is a 20-25 minute ride to a train station, past that if it takes an hour plus to get into the ciity, its all good

I have a driveway and some tools in NJ if you need to do repairs. I'm usually in NYC as well. Mostly at JFK. We have a small shop here as well.

im in huntington, like 10-15 minutes from northport. west hills park is 10 minutes away from the cold spring harbor train station, and 10 minutes away from the not-as-nice area huntington train station (both on the port jeff line). that line goes to northport as well, its two stops east of huntington.

penn..... hicksville... woodbury, syosset, CSH, huntington, greenlawn, northport... port jeff.

Its stuck in my head forever!
thanks for reminding me!

ha...yeah i always take the port jeff train out to northport from the city. i actually do shows at the john engeman theatre in northport. so i'll be right there in a hotel for a week...i'm going to check that place out, sounds like its in the perfect spot

and speaking of nothing possibly going wrong on my xj...my ac compressor failed in spectacular fashion today so now i get to fix that before i come out!

crimsondragon...thanks for the offer dude, hopefully i won't have to take you up on it
