Can anyone help me out? I need to know if there are any special smog equipment on an xj that would prevent an out of state 97 xj passing smog in Ca. What upgrades, if any, need to be made?

as always, appreciate the help!!

Dave

You'll want to remember that it's "Federal" emissions if you go to buy parts, but it should also say that on the emissions tag under the hood ("This vehicle complies with xxx" at the bottom,) and it should be able to pass if you point that out to the smog guy.

There isn't any difference in "equipment" used - but there are some differences in the sensors used (they're mechanically the same, but responses may be different) because Federal emissions standards are a little looser than CA, and the ECM's are going to be different.

As far as I recall, CA does not require retrofitting Federal vehicles to CA standards - otherwise, I'm sure we'd hear about it (as in "Who's going to pay for it? I'm not!")

You should be fine. Out of state cars don't require any special equiptment or testing. My 96 is a federal certified vehicle. Passed smog just fine.

It's been a few years since I lived in Cal. But, back around 93 or so, my GF from here brought her 87 Mustang 5.0 out and registered it in Elk Grove. The DMV charged her an extra fee (something like $300) due to the fact it didn't have a California Emmisions label and wasn't origanally destinated to CA for sale there.

Granted, since then more new vehicles meet CA emmisions, which coincedently MA is copying now, though we won't admit it.

CA used to charge an $300 to register out of state vehicles since they didn't conform to CA emission standards. When I moved out from Ohio in 1998 I got dinged with that fee. About five years ago, a lawsuit against the state regarding this fee was settled and it was determined that the fee was unconstitutional. Not only was the fee dropped, but everyone that paid the fee during the lawsuit was reimbursed with interest. I received a check for around $340 from the state.

Ditto. No special requirements. It will smog just like any other vehicle.

Leave it to California!

[I can say that as I was born and raised there. I'm still a Californian at heart.]

Mine was federal too. 96 2 door, brought from Oregon. No problems at all.
