Hey All,
I just put a 3.5 RE and 31's my 01XJ. I'm gonna be pulling a 2000lb. pop up camper without trailer brakes on it.. How much worse is it going to stop then when it was stock? What kind of brake mods should I make? Will crossdrilled or slotted help,or is rear disc the way to go?
Sorry for all the questions but this is what this forum is for anyway,(right)?
Thanks
Frank

Not really much you can do. The only way you can really make a difference is by doing a WJ knuckles with your current axle. With the WJ You get a dual piston calipers and larger front discs. You could maybe convert the rear to disc that might help.

Just be sure to get a load balancer. I believe Jason from www.jeepin.com had done something simular.

Don't mean to hijack your post.. :wave1: ..But, I've been pondering brake upgrades too. Seems to me that the Dana 30 is fairly prolific, and has been produced for many years. Is there another vehicle (GC???) that came with a similar D30 and Bigger front discs???? Seems that would be a simple way to go? Inparticular, the last 2 years came with 16" wheels (mine) and do have some room to grow within the wheels.
Anybody investigated this?

Look into getting trailer brakes for the trailer. I was pulling to Moab a 3K lb trailer (or around there) and one of the wires got loose (didn't figure out where the problem was till I got to camp) and the pedal wasn't tied into the brake controller, but at least the brake controller manual override worked. Anyways, as I was coming down this nice tall hill my trailer started to flip flop side to side: now I have the antisway par piece that ties into the hitch on the jeep end and into the trailer tongue and it was set pretty tight and that didn't help much (without it it would have been probably ugly) and it wasn't till I hit that ovverride gently (on top of everything the road was wet cause it just rained!!) to stabilize the trailer. In any case when I got to camp I found and fixed the problem that night!!

You might experience it less as I think wind helped my situation, but the again if you're coming down hill and you're braking.... well what's stopping your trailer from flip flopping side to side? What if you have to brake in an emergency??? Also AFAIK some states require trailer brakes over 1K lbs.

I've got the crossdrilled TRW Power Stop Brake Rotors & the TRW Extreme Performance Power Stop Brake Pads on mine & they helped a good bit. I wish they made shoes for the back for mine cause the back brakes still suck.
