i just got a 99 grand cherokee limited. had a mech look at it and he said it looks as if it has a 2" lift on it. it has 18" dub wheels and 255 55 18 tires. drives like crap...........wants to just take off when i hit a dip or wave in the road. also the body roll from side to side is awful.....any one have any ideas on either problem? im thinking of buying a set of 15" wheels/tires to just try out and see if steering is any better. i have new upper control arms and gonna buy the lowers also to see if that helps driving. what will fix the roll?????????? thanx i need to get it fixed cause my wife hates driving it and will want to get rid of it soon if not fixed :(

did the PO take off the front sway bar?
are the shocks shot? or are they even there?
need more info here.
the tires are low profile, so they arent going to make it less stable, infact they will have less sidewall roll, making it more stable.
something is wrong with the suspension, look at sway bars, bushings, and shocks. control arms will not help this..

also this forum is for 84-01 jeep cherokee XJ
not the grand cherokees, they are similar but different enough.
i would suggest posting your problems at NAGCA.com
there are alot of knowledgeable people there.

Shot in the dark but doesn't a sway bar control/eliminate body roll aka sway? Make sure BOTH of yours are there, solid and connected properly.

Check your front and rear sway bar and their bushings on frame and axle. Breing lifted (???) their angle has likely changed to less than ideal unless longer sway bar to axle links were installed.

Also if your mech looked at your rig to fix this and DIDN'T check or at least suggest replacement of sway bar and bushings....fins a new mech.

Also if it's lifted and longer sway bar links weren't installed it could affect the angle of the bar and with it handling as well.

Could be a combination of things too. Check you shocks condition, angle and their mounting points top and bottom, and make sure everything's tight and in good shape. Body side shock mounts love to snap bolts.

Check to see if the track bar (Front AND Rear on a grand) has been relocated (added bracket) or redrilled on the axle too. misalignment between track bar and steering link can cause wierd stuff. Mine was kinda squirrely when the TB and drag link were misaligned with each other. Hit a bump with both tires and it swerved a bit to one way or the other. Also tighten the track bar bolts on the axles and frame, especially the bolts that mount the TB bracket to the frame . They tend to loosen up over time.

Proper alignment of TB and DL, good sways, bushings and shocks? Now I can let go of the wheel hitting big bumps with both tires...tracks straight and the steering wheel doesn't even move.

This feels like that whole "regular" Cherokee thing... lol My wife has a ZJ and they have horrible sway just stock... IMO.
