We're getting close, and RJ and I will need to discuss logistics for the crustacean procurement squad. Lobster bake will be Saturday afternoon/evening, at Bass Harbor Campground (right, RJ?). Dunno what the going price is for lobsters up there, and it could change by next week anyway, so you'll all have to do your own estimates.

I also assume -- but I am not certain -- that steamers will also be available. Perhaps RJ can confirm.

Let's start the head count over. Those who are planning to attend, please sign on below, and indicate how many people will be in your party, how many lobsters you will want, and if you want steamers, how many pounds.

Eagle:
* 1 person
* 1 lobster
* 1 pound steamers

Myself
My Wife Kelly
Dog Duncan

Not sure about Lobsters...we sometimes do and sometimes don't:D

There will be plenty of Lobster Steamers for us to use Sat Afternoon!

I'll ask about steamers.:D

From my dad....

just checked: lobsters done the hill are 1500 feet away and $4.50 per pound ...steamers are available [with at least a 48 hour notice at $3.50 per pound , i can get all you want but must know by thursday noon at the latest

That sounds like a great price to me RJ. My order stands. Are we interested in anything else for the meal? I'll donate potatoes that I can get from a farm that comes to the flea market here.

That sounds great, Grizz. I was planning to stop by Sam's Club and get a couple of industrial-size cans of baked beans. I'm sure we'll find some way to warm them up.

Fresh corn has all disappeared around here, so since Bass Harbor is farther north I assume it's long gone up there, too.

I plan to arrive Thursday so I can spend Friday helping get things set up. Once we have an idea how many people, I'll hit a supermarket in Ellsworth for some deli cole slaw. If you're doing spuds, I'll skip potato salad unless everyone thinks we need it.

Baked or salad?

What's everyone prefer for the potatoes? Either way is fine for me. We should be able to bake them on the upper rack, wrapped in tinfoil, of one of the grills. If it's salad you all want, then I'll peel and boil them here and keep them in a cooler on ice until Saturday night and then throw it all together.

Gas is supplied....until you eat Eagles Beans....then you make your own:D :rolleyes: :D

ok count us in..
1 = me
2 = the kids

3 bugs and only about 1# of clams

it looks like its turning into a "psuedo-potluck" kinda thing.. i'll round up some drinks.. probably go with cans.. some iced tea, coke, sprite, any special requests?? another issue.. who's bringing their kids?? i'm bringing my 2 girls.. 7 and 9.. i don't want this trip to be boring for them.. how about some detailed directions to get there.. i can get there with my rand mcnally but some simple instructions would probably help us all out.... is there a spot for us to make a big fire to hang around?? what about wood too?? a few details ive been wondering about...

RJ's Dad has a really good set of directions on the site. Also a big warning about a bridge being declared "Unsafe".

The directions on the web site are excellent, and I concur that the route through Bangor is faster.

There is a third option, which is to get off I-95 at Portland, take I-295 to a few miles north of Portland, and follow Route 1 all the way from there up to Ellsworth. Time permitting, I prefer that route because it's the most scenic, but it will take you through a bunch of small towns that can slow you up. This is nowhere near as much of a problem in late October as it would be in July or August. This option also takes you by Freeport, if you have any interest in stopping at the L.L. Bean store. (There is also an L.L. Bean outlet store on Route 1 in Ellsworth, last I knew. But the outlet store is less than 1/10 the size of the main store and doesn't have an indoor trout pond.)

For those with kids, a couple of miles south of L.L. Bean on Route 1 is a teddy bear factory, where you can select your own bear "hide," pick the eyes and nose you want, have them sewn on, and then stuff your own teddy bear. Don't have the URL but if you're interested, search on "Maine" and "Teddy bears" and it should come up.

For the bigger kids, another mile farther south on Route 1 is the headquarters and store of the DeLorme Company. They're the people who sell all those state Gazeteer books and maps. The store is a treasure trove for people who like maps. USGS maps of the entire state of Maine, plus all their books, plus mapping software for both Windows and Mac computers. I believe that's at Exit 17 off I-295 in Yarmouth. The teddy bear store is near the Yarmouth/Freeport line.

You can also access all these stores using Option 2, from I-295.

BTW -- the bridge at Bucksport is "unsafe" for large, heavy trucks but the weight restrictions would not apply to an XJ, even loaded for a weekend of camping.

For reference, from New Haven where I live most locations on Mount Desert Island are about 400 miles. The New Hampshire/Maine border is the halfway point for me, so figure about 200 miles from the state line to Bass Harbor, plus whatever it takes from your home to the Maine line.

Problem??

The web site for the teddy bear store is www.mainebear.com -- however, regardless of where I find it, when I click the link it comes up with a "Site not found" error message. Their web site could be down, or they might have gone out of business (or maybe shut down for the season?)
