I have an 87 xj with 215k miles and the original tranny that has never been rebuilt. its going bad and i was wondering if i should go with a non peugot (is that how you spell it?) tranny. its a 4 spd automatic. thank you

So do you have a 4 speed auto? If so it is an AW-4 not a puke-goat! If you have a 5 speed then it is most likely the puke-goat and swaping out for the AX-15 is highly recomended. I had a tranny guy tell me he rebuilt a puke-goat and it was not a whole lot better after the rebuild.

Thought that the 4sp auto was the Toyota trans... Mines at the shop right now for a rebuild. Bad joint ate it up :anon: my fault for not catching it in time. Anyway rebuild is running me 800 bucks- not too bad, it managed to drive 169k and I could probably get away with driving it for a while longer. The 4sp is a good tranny worth rebuilding.

Properly, it's an Aisin Warner tranny. A number of Toyotas use this model, or a very slight variant of it, but I don't think it's quite identical.

is it worth rebuilding the aw4 then? how much more would an ax-15 cost and is it an automatic? even though i like stick better, i dont really want to try to change my jeep to a stick, too much money.

I'd rebuild it. Mines just back from the shop. Rebuilt torque converter, tranny, and new seals for the xfer case.- not to mention the new joints... Total cost OTD $1275.

The AW-4 (I still like to call it the "Toyota Tranny") is like the I6 engine. If you take care of it and it will last a long time. Swapping to the AX-15 would be a good idea only if you really, really, really want a stick. I don't think it's much stronger (medium duty) than the AW-4. Good luck!
