If the surrounding States don't crack down on this offense, won't they become places that harbor those individuals and in fact be in violation of their own Statutes which make aiding and abetting a criminal a crime itself?

How will all this additional Police time be funded?

What about the issue of jurisdiction between AZ Officers and the INS?

If they do not step up and follow Arizona's steps forward then I suppose they would. I'd like to think the surrounding states would also put an effort forth to reduce the illegal immigration.

Here I was thinking that "undocumented workers" were also known as "illegal aliens" back before we got all touchy feely about them.

Criminalizing illegality... yes, I am all for that.

I'm not sure what I think about the fact that they can randomly stop people and ask for papers, that really smacks of Nazi Germany. However, the fact that half the time nothing is done even when someone is known to be an illegal alien is infuriating. Laws should be enforced equally, or removed from the books.

Employers say they are stuck between a rock and hard place.

On one hand the Fed requires THEM to determine if the paperwork is valid. Employers do not have the tools to do a complete background check on each new hire, and there is no standard on paperwork anyway. On the other hand, if they start rejecting folks who happen to be valid, but the paperwork looked fishy, they could be sued for discrimination. For the employer, it's a no-win.

It seems to me that if this Nation actually wants to do something about illegal immigration, the burden can not be just on employers, or border patrol, but it has engage the local LAW enforcement.

I don't believe that LEO believe it's their job to enforce Federal laws, just State and Local laws. The AZ law criminalizing Illegal Immigration seems silly, but unless the law is on the State Statutes I don't think it will be enforced.

And even that is not a guarantee that the law will be enforced.

E-Verify... My employer just went through this. Apparently all contractors working on government funded programs must verify employees are eligible to work in the US. Payed for with our tax dollars, managed by Sapient.

Well, we all know that driving without a valid license isn't a crime. And of course presenting false documents to a law enforcement officer isn't a crime. As long as you're in the country illegally.

They're not enforcing the laws currently on the books, passing a new law isn't going to help.

i live in AZ. yep we got a law for that too. its commonly referred to the employer sanctions law. the sheriff of maricopa county, Joe Arpaio, has done several raids on businesses known to be knowingly hiring illegal aliens and arrested the illegos, and severely fined the business. it has had mild success here.

i work in construction. there has been times when people have been kicked off the jobsite and fired for being an illegal and either not passing e-verify or providing false documents. i believe e-verify has slightly reduced the number of illegals on most of the job sites that i have been on. its the employers responsibility to terminate the worker if there is a discrepancy with e verify. not all have been doing that though.

it wasnt uncommon for a traffic stop to take place and for the officer to realize that it was in fact an illegal. often there was no action taken because it was a federal law, or that ICE was not willing to come out. now there is one more tool available to LEOs to help combat arizonas increasing illegal immigration problem.

screw that. just build a bigger, more fortified wall with machine gun nests 1/4 mile behind. anyone- human or drug smugglers- observed crossing would get a warning burst and if they dont turn around and run with their tail between their legs then they get to meet some more accurate fire... but thats just my personal opinion.
