Does anyone on here know anyther about the American Axle 11.5" rear axle that came in hd dodge and ford trucks? The reason i ask is that i can get the rear axle out of a coworker's truck for super cheap, his truck is an '03 dodge ram 2500 cummins diesel. He didnt know what the axle was and after some looking online it should be a aam 11.5" with 3.73 gears. I didnt know if this was something work buying to sell or even hold to onto until i build another jeep with 37"+ tires, or is it just too big/heavy of an axle for an xj? thanks

There are people who stuff Rockwell 2.5-tons under and XJ, so size isn't the limit you think it might be...

The AAM 11.5" runs about the size of a D80, for comparison, and AAM usually does a good job with their axles (I think they've been doing "Corporate Contract" for Chevvy for years.)

Ratios can be a bit limited due to size and general application - but if I could make it work and thought I needed it, I'd do it!

(Me? I just want to score a pair of D44's, fore and aft, and regear to about 4.27-4.54:1.)

The aam 11.5 is one of the strongest axles out there there are quite a few ratios and lockers available for it.

The downside to it is the size and weight. Unless you plan on running 39" and up tires, it is going to get hung on everything.

IMHO if its cheap, grab it.

I have one in the back of my Ram with 6.7 CTD...no way could you use that thing without running around 46 inch tires without dragging the ground everywhere . I have a 14 bolt in my XJ with 40's , but it's cut/plated with a ring gear turn down , so it has 2 inches of clearance a stock housing does not ...LOL...and it still hangs more than I'd like with just 40's , So without that extra 2 inches I'd need 44's to be where I'm at with 40's , So the 11.5 obviously would need bigger than 44's ...Pisses me off they come stock with 1541h shafts and my little 10.5 does not .
