Auto Trans Leak?

Picked up a 1998 Cherokee Sport with 90,000 miles.
Drove it around town a few times and everything seemed tight. Trans shifted good, engine ran smooth, everything seemed right.

Took it for the first run on the freeway and on the way back I see white smoke coming off the back of the jeep. I stop immediately at a parts store, thinking the rear main blew.

To my surprise, the engine oil is full. So next I check the trans and it appeared empty. The ATF had blew back on the cat and muffler and was burning. Grab some ATF, fill it up, checking the level with the engine running in park. Made it home ok.

Took it into the local trans shop, they say it might be the pump seal, the torque converter seal or some other problem, and the wanted $2000 to pull it and completely rebuild it.

Talked to a couple of different people that work on transmissions, and both of them told me that you should check the ATF level with the trans cold and in netural on jeeps. I even found that on the dipstick. They suggested taking it to the car wash, cleaning the bottom off and re-checking the level, topping it off about a quarter of an inch over the add line, no more.

Well I've been driving it around for the last couple days, the ATF level is staying at the same place when it's cold and fills up to the max line when it is hot. Still shifting fine.

The guys said that there was a vent tube that blew/siphoned excess ATF out of the trans into the bell housing, where it would run out. It appeared like that was where it was leaking, no where else. Seems to have been the problem, but I need to run it out a few more times on the freeway until I'm confident. So far, it hasn't leaked another drop!

Anyone else run into this type of trans leak?

Thanks

Haven't run into that type of leak but normally, Jeep tranny fluid needs to be checked when engine is HOT and in park or neutral after tranny has been well exercised.

My 99 is sure that way and it has the same tranny as your 98. Recheck your owners manual/dipstick to be sure you are checking it correctly.
