Hey Matt, good to hear you are getting close. The dealership route is not a bad one, as long as you don't mind working flat rate. There seems to be more $$ in heavy equipment than autos, but I happen to like cars. My job is going well, it's actually a lot of fun at times.
My advise to you would be to not look at the $$$ as the bottom line. Find a job that may pay you a bit less, but is willing to give you extensive training. Factory 'off-site' would be best, you will learn more 'in-depth' tech. The more you know early on, the better. On-site (apprentice) would be my second choice.
UTI gives you a little information on a lot of topics. It's similar to working at an independent that works on anything that rolls through the door, you get ok at a lot of stuff, but never get really good (proficient) at any one thing. I'd look for a job where you can specialize in one or two brands, ie: Kenworth, BMW, Caterpillar, Ferrari, off-shore drill rig, you get the picture.
If you decide to go the car route (BMW?), I can set you up with a friend of mine (fellow Jeeper) in Scottsdale and you can check out the most advanced (largest, coolest, etc) BMW shop in the country.
Keep me posted and good luck!
Steve
