97 XJ with stock leaves , are they supposed to have a little droop in them at each end close to the eye?? the rest of the spring is flat...no arch either direction

From your description I would say no. For whatever reason XJ leafs are notorious for flattening out prematurely.

Mine do have a "kink" where they flatten out right before the eye. I believe in my case the culprit was a set of RRO shackles hitting the bumper bolts under compression so that the springs had no where to go, but bend.

The springs on my 97 looked like O__________O, usual wear.
As long as they don't look like an "S", then spring wrap hasn't taken over yet.
Curved a bit in the front, then straight to the rear (shackles) are what my buddies 95 looks like after years of hard wheeling and towing, they are shot.
How do the bushings look on yours? How are the shackles?
