I've got my first: a 1979 Chrysler 70 horse. It doesn't run right, won't speed for more than about 30 seconds. I changed the water pump impeller, the old one looked like ass, and I added a tell-tale (pee hole). But running it in the driveway almost no water comes out of the tell tale. I get a little when I rev it, but that's it. Any ideas what to look for and how to fix it?

Also, if you know of a good boating forum I'm sure I'll need a lot of help with this thing.

Iboats.com that's the forum I've got all my info for my 79 Chrysler skier 700, lots of good info and parts for Chrysler marine stuff.

Chryslers are odd ducks. How is the temp on the head? Pull the hose off of the tell-tale and blow in it (with engine off), it should not be difficult to pass air.

follow the fuel line untill it hits a small box and in that box is a screen...pull screen and blow it out. if that doesnt help then pull the carbs and clean them. its a two stroke motor and there isnt much to it. spark+fuel+timing=running motor......process of elimination. if that doesnt help then replace the bulb on the fuel line because it is not holding the prime needed to fill the carbs.

I dunno, there's no gauge. I could touch it fine but I wouldn't want to hold it, so maybe 150? This was idling in the driveway. I bet out on the water it got hot, but I didn't think to check the one time I had it out (I didn't suspect a cooling problem then).

When I had the lower unit off I put the garden hose on the water pipe (that the pump connects to) and water squirted out the telltale.

Yeah, gauges for temp are uncommon. As long as you can touch the head, that is usually a good thing. You can go to a marine parts place and get a crayon, mark the head... if it melts, you are getting too hot.
However, if you can touch the head, some water comes outta the pee hole, and water is coming out of the exhaust, should be ok.

IIRCm Chrysler used a funky oil/gas mixture, so verify that.

As stated above, carbs and fuel supply. They are critical. Too lean, you will be shopping for a new powerhead or a replacement outboard.

Was it used in saltwater? Or just lakes? I am guessing lakes, otherwise you would be complaining about how difficult it was getting the leg off. :-)

Hope coils aren't too expensive or hard to find. I just ordered a new thermostat and the damn thing was $30!

But it turns out that's why I didn't have water out the telltale, it needs the thermostat for some restriction (mine was missing). I added a restriction to test and got a strong jet of water from the telltale :yelclap:! Made my day right there.
