Considering selling my Jeep after this coming fall, i dont need a lifted/locked rig anymore. Frankly, my back cant handle it. But i would like another 4wd truck, i kinda miss my 95 F250.

My Dad's looking to get a new rig, and i'm considering his current. He's got an 02 F-150 crew/shortbed 2wd King Ranch with i believe a 4.7L. Dad's a retired Diesel Tech and always maintained his toys, although he cant do the maint he once could it gets done by a Ford Tech neighbor or by me when i'm down south. Texas rig now in SC, i find this rig extremely comfortable and i can get a great deal from Dad obviously.

Anyway, anyone know what's involved in a 4WD conversion using OEM components? Are the parts readily available, stout and affordable?

Google search isnt producing for me.. appreciate any input.

I cant speak as to what the going rate on the parts would be, but with that many of them out there I would imagine "readily available" shouldnt be too big a problem. The wiring could be tricky since I dont know if a manual shift transfer case was offered in that generation, most I saw were pushbuttons. I have also never known them to have any inherent weaknesses, unlike the chevy's which always seem to have vacuum disconnect failures, and expensive ones at that. Try some of the Ford forums (bet you're doing that as I type this).
That is a nice truck and a great trim package. I had an 01 SuperCrew Lariat 4x2, and it was a comfortable truck I always enjoyed driving.

I know of a truck for you, your old F250. My brother would sell it back to you, almost exactly like it was when you sold it to him. Seriously!

Rich, i believe your right on the manual transfer, it's vacuum and electrical from what i found. Also found some saying the frame is different. I changed up the search terms and found a bit more info... most threads i find is the typical "just sell it and buy a 4wd truck". Took me back to the late 99 when i was building the last XJ.. that started as a 2wd Texas rig.

so now your going to change you name to "OverlandF"?

"Old&Indecisive"

Hell, that thing was tougher to jump in than my Jeep.. but i liked the room inside. But i dont think it'd suit my current needs.

I believe 2wd vs 4wdmy is a different frame. Torsion bars for 4wd, coils for 2wd. A SAS would honestly be less work

I would forego the conversion and just buy what you want, even if it means looking a little longer.

x2... there are sooo many of these trucks out there, there is no reason you couldn't find what you are after. Can't throw a dead cat on a car lot around here and not hit a used ford pickup for sale.

If it was a GM, that would be different...:D

Appreciate the input guys, guess if i want it i'll have to settle for the 2wd.

Thing is.. it's got sentimental value to me as it's my Dad's.

Looks like a pretty cool trailer also, like father like son x2?

Same as it was when you sold it. He bought an '05 PSD F250 several years ago so it has been just sitting around. I keep on bugging him to sell it.

We have an '01 F-150 super crew short bed that my kid beats the living daylights out of on a regular basis. It has well over 190, 000 on it and we have only replaced coil packs and a trasnsmission. Pretty durable trucks.

x2 i havent seen under a 2wd but im pretty sure this is correct. SAS is cooler anyway.

I had a 2wd, , and I honestly dont believe the frame is different, both from sight and from cost cutting measures all the manufacturers practice these days..BUT, I would definitely say that there are different crossmembers in place, for sure. That would include the engine cradle, which on the 4wd also serves as a mounting point for the front diff. That would be a lot of work, indeed.
I do like the SAS idea, though. That would probably be a fairly simple conversion. The only open question is the wheel bolt pattern on the 4wd's..4x2's had a metric 5 lugger, but I think the 4x4's are 6..
