Advice on moving to Alaska

I live in Oregon and my girl friend and I are seriously considering moving to Alaska this time next year. Right now we're trying to figure out what areas of the state would suit us best. We would be looking for a town with between 50,000 and 100,000 people.

My hobbies include shooting and four wheeling, so there would need to be plenty of places to do both.

My girl friend is going to be a pilot, so we would also need to be close to some aviation schools where she could complete her training and decide how she is going to pursue her career. Me on the otherhand, I have no real skills so I could most likely get a low paying job in any town we move to.

We would be moving up there with a nest egg of a little over 20k, so we would have some sliding room if employment was not immediately found. I do hear that the cost of housing is high. Any idea what a small house with a 2 car garage normally rents for?

Right now we are mainly looking for suggestions on what citys to move to. Neither of us have ever been there before. Through my internet research I have found a few pilot schools in Anchorage, so perhaps a smaller town within an hour or two away?

What time of the year would be best to take a trip to check a few things out? I would like to drive up there and spend two weeks checking out the state. Only my current situation wouldn't allow me to get away until November. Would that be a poor time of year to make the drive? Assuming we stay in the southern part of the state, how much snow would I be expecting to encounter, and how cold will it be? Are the roads plowed between major citys?

Thanks for the advice

I just got back from Alaska. I was fishing down on the Kenai Peninsula. My friends who live up there say that Anchorage is nicknamed 'Los Anchorage', if that gives you any idea about Anchorage. It's a regular big town just like Portland/Vancouver, Salem, Eugene.

You'll spend two weeks just driving there and back. Fly.

If I could hire out with the Alaska Railroad as a locomotive engineer only, I'd move up there in a heartbeat. Unfortunately they don't hire that way and it'd be a step back in my career. I'll have to wait for retirement.

Good luck!

Just to clairify, I was planning for 30 days off, 2 weeks driving, 2 weeks in Alaska.

Is November going to be too cold? When does it start warming up?

Hell, if I could, I'd drive you up there myself. Alaska is cooool! (no pun intended)

I'd still fly though.

I bet The Weather Channel can answer those questions.

As far as Towns Go, you are probley looking for somthing more like Anchorage, Eagle River, Fairbanks or the mat-su valley (palmer, wasilla).. Housing is high in Anchorage right now, You would be looking at $1200-900 a month rent.. Out in Palmer and Wasilla, rent is a little lower, for now.

The best time of the year to come is mid-May, June, July and early August!

I would not recomend driving up in November.. It's Cold and icy. I would stick to the summer months.

The roads are plowed, But we dont really have major cities.. Not like you are used to, I'm sure.

How much snow really depends on the year.. Some years there is very little snow, other years they get dumped on.

Lucky you. I'm entering my second year of community college, and after I get my associates degree I'm seriously considering a transfer to the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. It seems like that'd be one of the best universities in the country for what I want to study.

Anyone here go to college in Alaska?

Also, I'm sure there's an Alaska relocation website that would send you info by mail.

I'm jealous: I would love to move up there!
