A boring PPE reminder

I was running the wire wheels in the garage last night cleaning up some metal. There was a haze in the air. After picking wire out of my jeans, I went and looked at the air compressor filters. This is why I use a full face shield & 3M dual cartridge respirators. I figure PPE can't be overstressed. Its no fun going to the eye doctor to have metal pulled out of your eyeball, and breathing this crap ain't any good for your lungs either. Don't rely on safety glasses alone, because metal can fly up under them and still find its way into your eyeball.

I got a Miller twin cartridge for underhood I keep forgetting to use it , but I have not done much grinding . I have caught cutting wheels in a bind a few times and even had one half of a 6 inch wheel get stuck in my hood, which I wear to weld cut and grind with...if it is not full face and neck it is not enough with high speed cutting tools ...I also pack my ears witb plugs or whatever I have when welding overhead and goggles...slag in the eye or or ear will leave a lasting mark .

I got metal in my eye when wearing safety glasses. Not an enjoyable experience having that drilled out. I wear a face shield now! Been meaning to pick up a half decent respirator tho...

I got that drill in 2013 when I built the trailer for the Jeep I must of had some metal shavings on my hat and when I came in I fell asleep on the couch and woke up with a Red eye I flushed it and it helped none and I could feel it in there so off to the optometrists office . I learned that rust eats away at your cornea hence why they use that dremnel thingy to remove the tissue with rust on it after pulling the metal . The entire Doctor visit only cost $50 at Walmart vision center...lol...I heard it costs a bit more elsewhere.

I've gotten metal plucked out of my eye 4 times, with one of those being a drill out.

That doesn't count the numerous times I've been able to use a q-tip and some vaseline or eye ointment to get it out.

3 of those 4 times, I was wearing safety glasses.

Now, I tend to wear a full bionic face shield, safety glasses, welding gloves, and a respirator when grinding/cutting.

If I'm using a wire wheel, I'll also usually do it close enough to one of the shop doors with my big azz fan pushing it out so it doesn't linger in the shop or give me a chance to breath it in.

I would say the respirator made the biggest change, been using one for years now. I'm not talking a small dinky face cover thing, but a dual cartridge one. I get mine from HF currently, and it's kept a LOT of bad stuff out of my lungs. Looking at the cartridge build up after a while is an eye opener.

Interesting...I need a similar setup.

Are any of these similar?

I use a 3M face shield from Home Depot $13

And under it I use this

https://www.uline.com/Product/Detai...gclid=CNWo2KKe1NACFQqUaQod-PoP4Q&gclsrc=aw.ds

with these filters

https://www.uline.com/Product/Detai...gclid=CNLAkK-e1NACFQgzaQodM2IGlg&gclsrc=aw.ds

I got them separately and it works out OK. Sometimes I'm places where I don't need the face mask but still want to wear the respirator.

These work better than the face masks you can buy. With the cheap face masks you can still smell what's going on. With the setup above you don't. Their effectiveness is limited if you have a beard. Hypoid Mike may be able to chime in more. He steered me into my current setup.

Nah, the face shield I'm talking about is one of these:

Far better than the regular face shields, much more comfortable as well.

That type of mask and filter setup is what I'll be moving to eventually. Something with slimmer cartridges would help.

Sweet! Thanks for the info!!!
