Well I'm confused.... can I or can't I retrieve the trouble codes in a 1996 OBD II XJ ? I read somewhere to cycle key... what is the correct way to do this? Starting with the key in the off position? I tried to do it once but I didn't
do it right.....or it's not allowing me access to the codes.....
The dealer said I can't use this to get codes on a 96....... Whats the truth?
Thanks for any thoughts or insight.....

you can go to Auto Zone or most major parts chains and they can scan OBDII an give you the codes.

do you know what brand or kind of scanner can i use on my xj 90 because i went to a few shops and they told me that they dont have one for this year of car

most parts houses only have a scanner for OBDII '96 and up, where are you in the usa?

On-off-on-off-on, sometimes with an extra off-on though. The engine should be fully warmed up; I couldn't get mine to pull codes after driving around the block but it worked after the 65 mile drive to work.

Check this out: http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoECUcodes.htm or if you swing by OC, I got the code reader :D

Yeah, they key thing works fine on my '96. Just remember it takes a second for the codes to start flashing, so you think it's doing nothing when it actually is working...

Like I said - it sometimes takes an extra cycle or two...

I tried fast, slow, both with & without the extra cycle/s & waited after each one 1 to 2 mins. It's just kick'n my ass......
I actually went to A.Z this eve. & got a PO171 code.... has something to do with being too lean on bank 1. I was talk'n with the guy & he thought it might be an injector, vacume leak, MAP sensor or the upstream O2 sensor.
Any ideas anyone........
Thanks !!

Pep boys has an Actron OBDII code reader on-sale for $99 until 6-12.
With four OBDII vehicles, I finally gave up and bought one. It shows more codes than what can be read with just the flashing lights. It is especially handy when an engine has multiple trouble codes.

And you can reset the comp without resetting your radio stations!
