62mm Throttle Body or 8.25 Rear Differential Swap.

I've noticed recently that my 4x2 96' cherokee has a dana 35 rear differential. It's a one-wheel wonder (open differential/one wheel burnout). There is nothing wrong with it, but I would like some opinions on which mod I should do first. I've already have a high-flowing exhaust and intake system along with 180* thermostat and precision auto fuel injectors. It's a street jeep. Should I take care of the throttle body first or switch to a chrysler 8.25 trac-lock differential from an auto 97-01 4x4 cherokee?

Thanks for your help.

Ask yourself two easy questions.
1.) When was the last time you wanted more throttle response?
2.) When was the last time you broke an axle shaft or slid the ass end sideways?

I suspect your answers will suggest that you upgrade the TB first, but I may be wrong.

I wanted more throttle response for a while. I slid side-ways a bit while making a right turn once a couple of months back when the road was wet. But, I think there might have been some oil on the road there too. The rear wheel on the passenger side kept spinning. I'd never broke an axle shaft. The D35 I have is the original one and I have small light wheels. I don't go offroading in it and I don't take it to the drag strip. I'm going with the throttle body now and I will swap to a limited-slip 97-01 8.25 rear axle later on this up coming year. Thanks for your help guys and have a Happy New Year! :)

I'd go with the diff, friend of mine blew up a d35 and spat spider gear bits through the diff cover on stock tires after doing a bit of a burnout. And traction is nice.

Never really had a throttle response problem with the 4.0l.......traction in 2wd with an open diff however:rolleyes:

Neither have I. I just want to make it even better. :D I'm definitely going to swap out the differential this year. Maybe look for one that is from a 97-01 cherokee with tow package since they have 3.73 gears. I don't want to be too picky, so it's which ever comes first. But it definitely has to be from a 97-01 4x4 cherokee since they are 29 spline and are limited slip. Can I reuse my stock driveshaft?

They're all 3.55's so far as I know........now if you could get the rear axle out of a 2.5l truck, I think that is a 4.11:1 :D

My torque converter doesn't lock anymore, so 4.11's are way overkill. :roflmao: At least I have 4th gear. I have a large trans-cooler so I'm not worried about the non-locking converter causing extra heat in the expressway. I'm at 25-2600 rpms at 75 mph.

diff, tb's gains are minimal, also ditch the 180 tstat for the factory 195, your just wasting money there

I'd get the diff, then the tb. My current rear axle is a 27-spline 8.25 with 4.10s, Auburn LSD, and the ZJ discs. The 4.10s are too much for 27" tires, so I'm gonna eventually put the used 3.73s that I picked up for $20 in. Get Jeff Leigh to bore your tb to 63mm for ~$100--you'll like the better throttle response.

Thanks Gradon. Yeah, I'm running wheels that are an inch smaller than factory in diameter with the canyon rims. I would like to go with the 29 spline 8.25. I've contacted Jeff right before the holidays actually. I'm contacting him again in a week. He's going to accept paypal again after the holidays. I would like to get it bored to 62mm to match the 62mm bore of the intake manifold. He already mentioned that he could do that for me. Does he give discounts to naxja members?

Not sure that tow package XJs got 3.73s, my 98 DD has a mopar hitch and it has 3.55s.

We're running a Ford 8.8 with LSD and 4.10s, it's perfect for the 4.0.

I was gonna say that would be a great option for him if he's looking for better performance and traction.

Plus he'll get rear discs as a bonus.
