6.4 Power Stroke questions.

Ok guys I want to pick some of your brains....and by some that means only people that have owned a 6.4 or Rew being he works at a ford parts counter ( I am pretty sure that is correct)

It seems that power strokes are like jeeps...if you have a 7.3 it's the only good motor....if you have a 6.0 than that is the best and then all the 6.4 haters but the guys that have them and got through the initial computer program problems are still going strong just lie a 6.0 that has had the head studs and all the crap done to it. If I can get some real life experiance that would be great I have a line on a really really nice 08 6.4 with 65,000 on it....I am leary due to being told by even sp called "jeep " people when my 2000 Xj was having over heating problems that it was my head for sure and the motor would not make it many more miles being it had been overheated so bad...well that was 45,000 miles ago and it still runs strong .....hence the reason i am looking for real world info not what you read on the web or your buddy told you about his buddies rig....THis is going to be a daily drive and tow rig for my jeep...I am not going to put a huge tuner on it and see how much power i can get till i blow it. I just want a long lasting truck.....Yes i know i could get a gas 6.2 in a new F-150 and that would do the trick also...lets keep this to 6.4 please...

When was it made? There are three "jobs" worth of trucks. There are the Job 1s which were the 1st round of 08s made before July of 2007. Job 2 was July of 07 to Dec of 07. Job 3 were the ones made in 08...that were sold as 08s.

My 08 F450 was made in May of 07 making it a Job 1. My current 08 F350 was made in March of 08 and is a Job 3 truck.

The f450 had several problems. The only motor related issues were the oil dipstick breaking off and blowing oil everywhere and losing a sensor that made the truck think the turbo was about to blow its brains out and detuned the truck. The other problems were all related to the dpf and the emissions crap on them.

My f350 has been good for the last 23k miles, 2 years that I have owned it. It was purchased with a ford rebuild motor in it. The prior owner did not change the oil often enough and washed the bearings out in the motor. You must change the oil every 5k because with the dpf, when the truck does a "regeneration" it over fuels the motor to burn the bad emissions stuff out of the dpf. Some of the fuel gets into the crankcase and after 5k, the oil is ready to be changed.

They also need to have fuel filters every 10k at least. I change mine with every oil change at 5k.

I would make sure that the thing has been maintained if you can.

Most all of the trucks by now have had the radiator replaced.

The auto hvac is known to have some goofy issues. My makes some funny noises and sometimes the pass side blows warm on a/c if you have the dual function going. The blend door motor is to blame and they are supposed to be easy to get to, I haven't changed mine yet.

The 6.4 is a sold motor. The dpf is what holds it back. Unfortunately, removing it is like removing the cat as far as regulations go.

A solid 6.4 with no dpf/cat/egr is a heck of a motor with a simple tuner. Let me know if you'd like to know more on that back channel as we wouldn't want to suggest illegal things to do on NAXJA.

I have 135k on mine and she tows the trailer really well.

mac 'maintenance is very key' gyvr

Mac: Thank you for the info.....You were one of the main people i was looking for input from. I will hit you up on the back channel....

Just FYI...

I change my oil at about 10K, fuel filters every 20K.

I have a "Job 3" truck.

The only issue I have had is one of the exhaust sensors went out, so it spent some time on a hook.

Comfort is a 10 on these, mine rides like a car, but still feels like a truck.

I talked to the diesel dude, he said "tell him don't be gay and get a 6.7"...

pretty much what has been already, its a 6.0 with the kinks worked out. keep an eye on the oil, make sure it doesn't smell like fuel. i guess the fuel injector pump can possibly leak into the oil. maintenance is key but you already know that. we don't get many in the shop so that's a good thing...

I have 2 E350s and one F350 with the 6.0. I picked the brain of the best independent diesel guy here locally, because I was considering a 6.4. He told me that the 6.0 and 6.4 are similar, and while they have not had as many issues as the 6.0 he still is not a fan and could not recommend them to me.

One of our big accounts has 9 of the 6.4 trucks that they bought new, and they will not be buying Ford the next time around.

We have a 6.4 F550 rollback at my part time job. Stock it registered 7-8 MPG average on the dash. After part of the exhaust fell off it shows 15-16 MPG average. Keep in mind this truck has 4.88s and an aluminum rollback bed on it, and it never really moves unless there is a car on the back.

Thanks for all the help Guys....Looks like I may just go this direction.....
