4wd linkage problem

My brothers 89 jeep cherokee with 231 tcase and ax-15 tranny has problems with getting in and out of 4wd. A lot of times he has to hold the linkage and somenone has to throw the lever in 4wd. He was stuck in 4wd the other day and had to slowly drive home like that. He just had to keep playing with the shifter and it finally came out. Is this linkage problems, motor mount problems or vaccum disconnect motor problems?-----kyle

When you say it does not come out of 4X are you going by the light on the dash? Are you going by the transfer case lever will not move into 2X? Have you tried duplicating the problem on jackstands?

The transfer case lever will move up and down either way but light will stay on and you can still feel it in 4wd. Have not tried to put it on jackstands ----sounds dangerous too!------kyle

Have him try backing up -- just a few feet. If the drive train has been under load, sometimes there is enough friction to hold it in 4WD. Backing up a few feet and then rolling forward again will usually correct that (if that's the problem).
