4.5in shocks 3in lift?

I have a set of 4.5 in lift shocks in the garage but only a 3in lift on my jeep. Will i be able to use the shocks and they will just remain compressed? I know its easy to get 3in shocks but im budgeted and these are free.

Really you should probably buy some new shocks, $50 CarQuest shocks will work great. Otherwise yes they will work, you will just have 1 in less up travel and 1 more inch of down travel. Just means if your not bump stopped correctly you risk braking a shock when the shock bottoms out too early.
