are the splines on the output for a 2wd mj the same as a 4wd mj?

i'm not sure about the spline count but you can bet the length is very different.

that is the point shortening a drive shaft is way cheaper than lengthening one.

yoke has 26 splines for a 231.

No, they are different. You can use the shaft, but you have to replace the slip yoke with a 4WD version.
