2000 XJ Cat Converters ever go bad?

I have a 2000 XJ (130K) with california emissions and I was wondering if anybody has ever had their cat converter (or converters) go bad or clog up. My jeep lacks power compared to my brothers who has the exact same drivetrain configuration except his is an '01 and fedeal emissions. It just seems to work harder than it should pulling moderate hills or operating at higher RPM when i pull my trailer. I've changed injectors, checked fuel pressure, and some other things and everything seems ok. So has anybody ever had the converters right off the manifold go bad or the one right before the muffler? I was thinking i might just replace the cat (before the muffer and no O2 sensors are after it) with just a straight pipe for now and see how it drives then. it'll be a cheap try. Also can you tell visually that a converter is clogged?

Not that I'm counting, but haven't you asked the same basic question 2 times previously?

Your CA emissions will effect, adversely, your performance. Period.

You can check with your local DMV and see what "mods" are legal in your state/locality.

Cold air intake, cat back exhaust upgrade, etc.

You might be able to convert to a Federal emissions vehicle (remove the CA only crap), but again, you need to do your homework.

Anyway, Obamainator will probably have us all on CA standards in a little while.

A couple of items:

Yes. On my 00XJ I have replaced the cat and both O2 sensors. It has 159K miles and is driven 50 miles each day in stop & go commute traffic.

I believe there is no longer any such thing as CA emissions (could be wrong hece saying "I believe") and 49 state emissions. When I worked for GM years ago there was, but sometime in the early 90's that went away.

I was wondering if mine is bad also. My exhaust stinks to high heaven. High miles but passes emissions with flying colors. It just stinks bad and offends people behind me.:dunno:

I thought the CA package had 4 o2 sensors versus 2 for the 49 state models

And I think it has something like 4 cat converters, 2 on the exh header and 2 down stream.

The Obamainator's EPA is allowing CA to create even stricter emissions regs--funny how the government, which has very limited powers in all areas EXCEPT interstate commerce, can allow one state to dictate to auto manufacturers what they have to do. Too bad none of the auto manufacturers have 1/100 of the balls of Ronnie Barrett, they screwed with him and he stopped selling to law enforcement in CA!
