1987 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer - $1500

I'm selling my 1987 Cherokee. It ain't what you'd call purty, but it's cool, solid and reliable. It has 215K miles on the 4.0 motor, which shows good, even compression, and the AW4 is working well. It's located in Lake Elizabeth, about 20 miles west of Palmdale or 20 miles north of Santa Clarita.

It came stock with an unusual combination of features: tow package, factory front and rear skid plates, manual windows and door locks, sun roof (leaked a little, PO fixed using fancy silicone caulking method), swing-out spare tire carrier, a Dana 44 rear, vacuum-disconnect Dana 30 front (I have it modified so the two halves of the axle are always connected - one less system to fail on the trail), NP-205 case.

I rebuilt the suspension about a year ago and installed a 2" budget boost along with new heavy duty ZJ steering arms, new front springs, new stock Up Country rear leaf springs, and new shocks (nothing special, generic OEM replacements, but they do the job). I also put BFGoodrich All-Terrains and Rubicon wheels on it - they look great, have at least 80% life left, and I feel are some of the best all-terrain tires you can buy. The Jeep will also come with the original wheels with some beat-up generic tires if you want them (they look like turbine blades).

Within the last year, I also gave the thing a full tuneup including cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. The fuel injectors are also new, as are the water pump and serpentine belt. I also replaced the problematic coolant expansion tank with a nice burly one out of an 80s Volvo - a big improvement in functionality and reliability. The Jeep runs great and stays cool, never even coming close to overheating. It averages around 18-22 mpg usually. It starts, idles, stops, drives, turns, etc. well.

I used this truck mostly for playing on the local trails but also quite a bit for extended commuting. My job moved a month ago; I was carpooling to work before, but now I have a 150-mile round trip every day. The Jeep hasn't let me down on this trip, but I did go out and buy a more practical commuter car anyway. This means I have a total of 4 cars now, which really doesn't make any sense.

Problems. Well, it certainly isn't perfect. The two-tone silver and brown paint has seen its day and quite a few after that; also, it's got some primer spots where I debadged it and sanded the old adhesive smooth in preparation for a driveway repaint that never happened. The body is completely, totally straight with the pictured exception of the driver's side front fender, which is a little wonky. This is a Jeep you wouldn't mind getting scratched up in the desert. The interior's a wicked cool burgundy plaid sort of motif, though the driver's seat is torn up pretty good. Still comfy though. The sunroof was a bad design. The cruise control doesn't work for whatever reason. Also, the blower fan is a little testy and only wants to work some of the time. When it does, the heat and AC both work GREAT. The front skid plate and tire carrier are temporarily off the truck, but I'll send them and all the original badges along with you.

I think that about covers it. I'd like $1500 for the Jeep. That certainly wouldn't cover what I have in it, but that's the way these things go, and I think it's a fair price given its overall condition. Let me know if you have any more questions that haven't been covered here.

Can you verify the t-case? The NP205 doesnt really fit under an XJ.. ;)

Sorry, my typo, that would be an NP231.
