Sorry, i have limited time to search but i got a call from a bud who has a line on a 1976 Ford F-250 D44/D60 combo. Is this something that i should grab for my XJ or ZJ? I have to let him know shortly, oh and the front is disc to disc and the rear drum to drum $300. Any quick help would be appreciated!!! - Thanks!! -B

The believe the D44 out of a Ford would be a lot of work to make it Fit.

The Assembly would have a Driver's Side Pumpkin and be 5 on 5.5. Best 44RS Axle for Swapping comes from a F150 Super Cab from 1977-79 that came with the same Axle as the F100 & F150 style (5 on 5.5" wheel bolt circle) except it's set up for Leaf Springs like the F250. It came with the 1/2" thick Tubes and the F250 Steering set up. The only real down side is how Rare these Axles are, and the tall Gears they come with.

correction the f250 axles are 8lug. and all you would need would be a bracket kit like the ones RE sells or ballistic.

i would get them...

i am about to get a d44/9" out of a 70s f150 with weld on wedges for $100...

I would go for a F150 5 on 5.5 rather than the F250 8 lug setup personally. Here are some specs for the F150. However, if you like the 8 lug setup... go with the 1978-1979 F250 Reverse Cut / High Pinion setup.

1966-1970 Reverse Cut / High Pinion Drum Open - King Pin 5-260x 2.75 x 1/2 Inches
1971-1972 Reverse Cut / High Pinion Drum Open - Ball Joints 5-260x 2.75 x 1/2 Inches
1973-1975 Reverse Cut / High Pinion Drum Open - Ball Joints 5-297x 2.75 x 1/2 Inches Panhard bar has a separate mount on the axle tube
1976-1977 Reverse Cut / High Pinion Disk Open - Ball Joints 5-297x 2.75 x 1/2 Inches Some 1977's had 2.75 x 3/8 Inch Tubes
1978-1979 Reverse Cut / High Pinion Disk Open - Ball Joints 5-297x 2.75 x 3/8 Inches Some had 2.75 x 1/4 Inch Tubes

F-150 Dana 44
8.5-Inch Ring Gear Diameter
1.31-Inch / 30-Spline Axle Shafts
1.38-Inch / 26-Spline Pinion
3.73 & Down / 3.92 & Up Carrier Break
Coil Spring / Radius Arm Setup (F-250's and 1977-1979 F-150 Super Cabs have leaf sprung Dana 44's)
5x5.5 Wheel Bolt Pattern on F-150's (F-250's are 8-lug)

In a F250 only the 1978-1979 was a Reverse Cut / High Pinion setup.

F-250 Dana 44
1961-1965 Standard Cut / Low Pinion Drum Closed - King Pin 5-260x 3.00 x 1/2 Inches
1966-1968 Standard Cut / Low Pinion Drum Closed - King Pin ? 3.00 x 1/2 Inches
1969-1975 Standard Cut / Low Pinion Drum Closed - King Pin See Note 3.00 x 1/2 Inches 1969-1973.5 had 5-74x u-joints / 1973.5-1975 had 5-309x u-joints
1976-1977.5 Standard Cut / Low Pinion Disk Open - Ball Joints 5-297x 3.00 x 1/2 Inches
1978-1979 Reverse Cut / High Pinion Disk Open - Ball Joints 5-297x 3.00 x 1/2 Inches

This is the top dog when it comes to Dana 44's. Some believe that the Ford high pinion reverse cut Dana 44 didn't become available until after 1977. This misconception is probably because a high pinion Dana 44 wasn't offered in the F-250 until 1977. The reverse cut high pinion Dana 44 was used in 1/2 ton Ford trucks from 1966-1979 and full size Ford Bronco's in 1978-1979.

Thanks for your help guys, i have till tomorrow to decide. I 'spose i should get searching. All your input is very helpful as I have very limited knowledge in the full size depatment. By all means please keep it coming

There's no problem using an HP44 out of an F-250. I have one under my jeep right now that I bought already narrowed and welded up from someone.

If you're planning on running high steer and want 5x5.5, either axle works as you'll be ditching your Ford outer knuckles, spindles, and caliper brackets.

Thats whats going into my jeep. I got a Built dana 60 (4.88, arb) for 750 and found a 78-79??? Hp 44 leaf sprung for cheap. (8 lug)

I wanted a D60 up front but i think ill live with this set up for awhile, since I already have a D44 arb out back, just gonna move it up front. Trying to save some $$$$$$
