    oh now what? (headlight question)

check the connector in front of the air cleaner box that feeds the forward harness. I just had some wierdness with my high beam indicator glowing dimly on low beam because one of the pins were green and corroded. After seeing this I started paying attention to the harnesses in the junk...

    Adding stock driving/fog lamp circuit

Hi guys- I just replaced the damaged front end on my 91 Laredo with an XJ front end that included fog lamps (has the relay and connectors in the forward harness for fog lamps). I also grabbed the dash switch panel that has the switch for the fog lamps. My question is: my 91 didn't have fog...

Simple questions about XJ rear D44

Hello- My 91 Laredo with 250K on it needs complete rear brake set up including both drums. It looks like it's time to install my stock XJ D44 I got out of an 88 model since I'm not putting any more money into the D35. ...besides my D44 has the stock posi in it which is perfect for my uses...

    Questions about ABS D30

Hi guys- my D30 on my 91 Laredo is kinda tired with 250K on it. Instead of putting the effort into rebuilding a vac disco axle, I'd like to use an ABS axle because of the bigger U joints. My XJ sees only light wheeling, mostly bad NorthEast weather- and 32s are the largest tires this axle is...

    Renix, HO, and TPS

Exceedingly easy question for you guys: I have a 91 HO which I have taken from 8MPG to 15MPG by reading this forum. I wanted to adjust my TPS in accordance with the procedures I've read and completely understand except for one big disconnect: Everything I've read is for the Renix, up to 90...

Purpose of dist pickup going to ECU...

The purpose of asking these questions is to find out what I have to do to convert the 4.0 to HEI. I have tons of experience with vintage musclecar (big block with carb application), but only know how the ECU/MPFI works in theory- particular apps, and the way things are actually accomplished I'm...

Purpose of dist pickup going to ECU...

Are you guys saying "sensor" figuratively or literally? IOW, there is a sensor in a 4.0 (91) distributor other than the stator and reluctor (the pickup set)? Thanks xj_convert

Purpose of dist pickup going to ECU...

Hi- I'd like to know why the pickup coil in the dist runs to the ECU. Does the computer vary timing, or is fuel mapping based on RPM, and this is based on the pickup's input to the computer? Thanks xj_convert

160 miles on a tank of gas??

Thanks for the suggestions. The motor is getting to temp, all otherwise feels and runs good... even the wires look newish. Because I don't know the entire maint history, it's getting a full tune up to get to a baseline, but given the (good) way it runs, I figured there was some kind of FI/ECU...

160 miles on a tank of gas??

My 91 XJ has 70K on the motor, and runs great, other than a pretty good shudder when it first lights on starting. Idles well, plenty of power. This is the first fuel injected vehicle I've owned, so other than the typical tune up stuff, what are some leading causes of bad MPG? The motor was...

Installed a new crane cam today

Yes you need some "special tools"- a degree wheel, and a piston stop, both are pretty cheap. Rent or borrow a dial indicator. This won't be in a Haynes manual, as it is a performance thing, but it means everything. This could get really long, so I'll keep this simple: You want to degree in...

Installed a new crane cam today

You probably just didn't notice the slack at first because you had the motor rotated such that one side wasn't tighter than the other as it is in your pic. You also might consider degreeing in your cam- 2 degrees makes a world of difference... xj_convert

    Draining Battery? Need some help.

Re: Draining Battery? Need some help. SOLVED Diagnosed my problem by jumping 12V directly to starter switch terminal on starter (not the main heavy 12V supply). Starter spun faster than it has since I bought the xj. Traced factory wire back to the bane of my electrical existence: a butt splice...

    Draining Battery? Need some help.

yeah, I realize the voltmeter is crap, but it's accurate enough (verified with digital meter) I'm wondering if my alt is not also bad, and allowing leakage back through it. Where does the alt output go on the XJs? I know, ultimately back to the battery, but I mean physically where does the...
