    1997 XJ vibration question.

I don't do math very well, so I go by the about 1° of shim per inch plan.

    Sudden sooty plugs

I disagree about the TPS. :) The closer to the published specification of an approximate TPS voltage range of from .25 volts at minimum throttle opening (idle), to 4.5 volts at WOT wide open throttle the better it will run.

    1997 XJ vibration question.

With an SYE, I have always added about 1° of shim for each inch of lift. Are you measuring the t-case angle and axle pinion angle from machined surfaces? Tom Woods Driveshaft calculates rear axle shim size. Divide the length of the drive shaft by the sum length of the drive shaft plus...

    Sudden sooty plugs

TPS is Out of Tolerance. The TPS is mounted on the throttle body. The TPS is a variable resistor that provides the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with an input signal (voltage) that represents throttle blade position. The sensor is connected to the throttle blade shaft. As the position of the...

Daily driven for a year then DOA! Dreaded crank no start. Please help

These are Primary symptoms of a faulty CPS. The most likely cause of it cranks and cranks but won't start up is the Crankshaft Pickup Sensor (CPS) located on the transmission bell housing. Often this part is also referred to as the CranKshaft Position Sensor (CKP). CPS/CKP failure is very...

1997 XJ won’t rev high and loss of power

If the Check Engine Light is ON, your Jeep is trying to tell you what is wrong. Try another OBD-II code reader and/or fix that fault first. As suggested already, check the fuel pressure, and distributor indexing Test the TPS. Clean the Idle Air Controller. Inspect all the engine bay...

    1997 XJ vibration question.

My 2000 has 5.5" of lift and no vibrations until about 85 mph. The symptoms described, suggest a bad u-joint, improperly balanced drive shafts, or excessive pinion angle.

    1997 XJ vibration question.

What does the front pinion angle look like? Are the motor mount fresh? What kinda rims and tires? Have you had the tires balanced with a Hunter Road Force balance machine? Remove the front driveshaft, and repeat the drive that causes the vibrations. If necessary remove the rear drive...

Daily driven for a year then DOA! Dreaded crank no start. Please help

1991-2001 HO A faulty Jeep 4.0 oxygen sensor can manifest as a lit check engine light, decreased fuel efficiency, rough idling, hesitation during acceleration, loss of power, black smoke from the exhaust, a sulfur-like smell from the exhaust, and potential engine misfires; essentially, the...

    Sudden sooty plugs

Test the Throttle Position Sensor and the Coolant Temperature Sensor. Test the O2 Sensor fuse. Inspect the O2 sensor wiring for chafed or melted wire insulation and check the wire plugs for corrosion and bent or pushed back wire plug pins.

Daily driven for a year then DOA! Dreaded crank no start. Please help

    6-8 mpg's suggests O2 sensor issues.

My front wheel has negative camber

Lift and short control arms roll the axle housing forward and that has a small effect upon the alignment. It usually looks much worse than it really is. Some aftermarket lower control arms for a 3 inch lift would be a good idea. Offset ball joints can be used, but I have almost 300,000...

    Sudden sooty plugs

First thing is to check for active or pending OBD-II Trouble Codes. Basic rich running should make you suspect the O2 sensors, an exhaust manifold leak, or faulty fuel injectors. Test the Throttle Position Sensor and the Coolant Temperature Sensor.

    01 fuel rail damper

My 2000 started leaking many years ago. I couldn't find a replacement, so I installed a fuel rail out of a 1998 donor XJ with no dampener. Runs like normal.
