Have you made sure that there is no trapped air in your cooling system? I've had something similar happen once and after I burped it then temps came down. Another common issue is collapsed coolant hose. Those are more likely to manifest themselves when temps come up as the rubber gets softer...
Sounds like the courtesy light relay might be shorted out or staying energized for some reason.... there should be a triangle connector looking relay under the dash, drivers side above pedals.
Good find! Intermittent issues are the worst to track down... I was going to recommend checking all the grounding terminals too. On old cars like that surface between the terminal lug and body gets oxidized and you get all sorts of weird electrical gremlins as a result. I would clean those up...
